Does anyone here at t4r.org run a complete IPT transmission?

Since I know I will have to address my transmission at some point in time, it honestly seems like spending $2800 for a completely built IPT A340F is the way to go. I'd do the removal and install myself, so even though it's a chunk of change, it's not much more than most would pay to have a used, completely factory transmission installed by a shop.

Just wondering if anyone with a 3rd gen is using an IPT built trans, or if you know of anyone using one in ANY generation 4Runner. Thanks in advance.

I dont know of anyone with the complete trans, maybe gadget. Curious why you would consider the whole shebang vs just the valve body?

I need to do the valve body.. I can feel 1-2 starting to slip a bit. Probably just drop the trans myself this summer and get new clutch packs and a better valve body. Hoping its that simple.

transgo has a shift kit available that looks to be a more cost effective upgrade then having the valve body sent out. I don't know of anyone using it yet, but for the price compared to everything else for our transmissions, it might be worth it.

I thought I read somewhere else that the transmission from one of the lexus cars might bolt up as well? I think the same gen LS400? I believe they had stronger clutch packs for the 1uz v8.

Why not drop an R150f in it, its a direct swap, and considering it bolts to the 3.4 the wiring and clutch pedal shouldn't be too bad. And you could pick them with the parts certainly for cheaper than $3k as they were used in the 2nd gen as well but the bell housing would likely be different.

Much cheaper than 3k... relatively minimal wiring involved for 5-speed swaps. Multimode T-case might fudge things up.

There are differences between the old R150s and 3rd gen R150s, 3rd gen having a longer input shaft and different bell housing.

I've got an extra V6 bell for an R150 if anyone wants it for a swap.

$2800 seems steep. I'm in between client meetings right now so I don't have the time but do a search on here. I swear someone had NEW OE transmissions sourced for like $1600 or something like that.

I've thought a lot about a R150F swap, havnt researched it much yet.

My concern is on the ECU swap. Will it be compatible with my URD wiring, or my Trac/vsc system, or my multimode system.

Theres no way im gonna be the one to spend the dough and hack up my truck to find out..

In an 02, a direct ECU swap is not an option... You'd have to wire your neutral safety switch to trick your Automatic ECU into thinking you're in neutral, while your manual transmission does not require any input from the ECU to operate. You'd be able to retain all of your URD wiring.

If your ECU thinks that you're in constant neutral, there shouldn't be any reason for the engine to operate incorrectly. If you were to attempt driving your truck without messing with the ECU, you'll throw codes and possibly have some sort of acceleration issues as the ECU prepares the engine for an automatic shift.

There are definitely some people who've managed 5 speed swaps while retaining their Auto ECU's. I am not sure if you could retain your multimode transfer case, there wasn't an available option for the manual transmission. You could probably bolt the T-case up, but the transmission is designed for J-shifter T-case... I don't know enough about how the multimode shifter itself works. This is where Google comes in.

If you can't keep multimode, there's always a J-shifter T-case,. The glory in this setup is that your whole transmission and 4WD setup would be mechanical. There's nothing electrical that can prevent them from working. I initially wired my T-case to the ECU as per factory, though I removed those wires in the interest of keeping one less element away from the computers. Working flawlessly to this day.

I'm not an expert in the subject as I've swapped to a 5-speed ECU... just chiming in to help illuminate your options. Unfortunately, a 5 speed swap looks like a hellish long nightmare in an 02. I'd go with a valve body replacement in the long run...

Good luck, dude!

A lot of Hilux Surf's were made with the 5VZ and R150 w/ multimode combo. I'm no expert but maybe you could look into the transmission ECU for those.

Interesting, thanks James and T4R2014 for the input.

James, you mentioned I would have to trick the ECU into thinking I was in neutral. Trac/Vsc only works in the drive gears, so this may be a no go as I really want to keep those systems. Not so much VSC, but Trac is awesome offroad. Hell would have to freeze over before I gave up my multi-mode, and if it did, I would just use it there too!

I'll look into those Surfs, thanks again.

But back to the topic of IPT transmissions..
