Does anyone know if taillight tint is illegal in California??

I'm sorry, I can't answer your question directly, but I agree, probably not legal especially in Calif. Notwithstanding the legality of it all, why would you want too? Man, the last thing you want to do is lesson any body's vision of your rear end.....just asking for problems. Just my 2 cents. Be safe.

Im in CA and have had mine tinted for the last 9 months and havent had a problem. I didnt use film. Had them painted with a flat clear over top.

You have reflectors in the taillight and it needs to reflect light as red if you tint the lens its no longer red. This is one way they will get you.

Plus, if you have them tinted, and someone does rear-end your tuck, then it might end up being your fault. If the other driver can't see you brake lights, then they might not have responsibility for the accident.
Regardless of how it looks, I personally can't stand it when I'm driving behind a car with tinted tail lights. It's often times hard to see when they apply the brakes.

CVC 24252 - shows illegal.. but, then, when has that stopped anyone?
it is a fixit ticket anyway.
As a side note, there are maaaany cars that I know of in cali with tinted tails, they rarely get hassled.
Just don't be the idiot who blacks them out to the point hat you can barely see the tails (one of them is right here, in this reply, btw!

Tinting them is one of my biggest pet peeves, no respect for other drivers.

People who go to a such extent that you can't see their lights do get on my nerves, but just saying that "tinting tails = bad", that's just plain ignorant. If not overdone, just like any other things, it can be aesthetically pleasing AND plenty of visibility...

Maybe you should disclose that you are installing tinted tail lamps and might have a slightly defensive view? And I like the one's you are planning, for the record, but you seem awfully touchy about it.

Yes I have a Can edition SR5 , and if I didn't it woud be my first mod just like all my other trucks. I hate getting cracked windshields as much as the next guy , it doesn't stop them all but they help. Where does it end though you get people with CD's , fuzzy dice , dream catchers hangin off there rear view mirror creating a blind spot on themselves , texting , putting make up on etc.... etc... I have 2 young children in my vehicles at all times I'll be dammed if I add anything to my vehicle that will increase the chance of me hitting somethig or somthing hitting me just because it looks cool.

I thought I made it clear in this, and few other threads that all my cars had and will tinted tail lights..

Not so much. The 4R (US) does not come with mudflaps stock, if it was such a 'danger' the gov't would have stepped in and regulated they be installed. We all know how annoying they are with all of their regulations!
You are taking something from the factory and making it less effective (at protecting you), no clue why anyone would want to do that. The only time you see your own tail lights is when you walk up to your 4R, everyone else sees then when you STOP so they do not HIT you. If you have some distracted driver behind you and they are not paying as much attention as they should I would rather have that little extra brightness catch their eye, maybe catching their attention so they do not plow into the back of you possibly injuring you or your family. Coolness over Safety! :redbrick:
Now if you LIFT your truck, sure then it would be polite to add mudflaps to your truck but even if you don't you are not impacting YOUR vehicle, just the poor guy BEHIND you. Who knows, if you get some guy with anger management issues he may ram you for tossing a rock back, but at least you can't blame that on your tail lights!
Btw, my seat belt strap is too wide, anyone know how I can trim it down?

If you don't get what I do to tail lights from what I have mentioned, I don't think you'll get it at all. I know some people don't get doing anything cosmetic, or anything at all to a car.. But I turn my cars into what I like them to look like. And if person is not able to see my stop signals the way my tails are tinted.. Well, they should not be on the road. But again, you'll come up with another anecdote to prove me wrong on that..

I am all for people doing what they want to their cars, we all have our 'opinions' on what looks good vs what does not, but the only person that it really matters to is the owner.
Are you telling me that when you tint your tail lights that it does not reduce the brightness, even by .1%?
Cosmetic changes vs safety changes are two very different things. If someone wanted to put a wing on their 4R it is theirs to do what they want, but compromising certain things, say the headlights and tail lights, that gets to me. People here complain about the head lights and have upgraded to make them brighter, no one has made them dimmer (that i know of!).

Hmmmm. I wonder if a big wing on the back would help me with that crosswind problem. I'm off to PepBoys (Rice Aisle) and Home depot for some 1/2" toggle bolts. See you guys later :hello:
