Does anyone use an oil extractor on the v6 engine?

I'm thinking of getting a vacuum extractor because it is so convenient, but I'm wondering if there are baffles or other structures that will get in the way of the extractor tube and keep it from getting all the way to the bottom of the oil pan when inserted down the dipstick tube.

Does anyone here have experience with these, and are you able to easily reach the bottom of the pan?

I had a Mityvac fluid extraction pump and had no problems with it and the tubes it came with. The dipstick tube is straight forward and goes right to the bottom of the pan.

I've used a MityVac to collect oil samples for analysis on mine, it takes a very small diameter tubing to fit in the dipstick tube but it seemed to go all the way to the bottom of the oil pan. Personally, I prefer putting the truck passenger side wheels on ramps to tilt the engine downward toward the drain plug, and draining through the plug. Gets the most old oil out of the pan this way.

I had the mytivac for a while. Was messy. You are supposed to clean it after each use which took forever. You can leave oil in it, but it can mess up the seals.


I sold it.

It always worked well but I just didn’t think it was easier that changing the 4.0’s oil normally. It is just so easy to do!

In my opinion if you had a Honda or something it would be super useful.

Meh, the 4Runner, even at stock height is very easy to change the oil. Mine is stock. My 07 Civic, however, does require ramps. I installed on of those fumoto valves years ago and it was is awesome. I keep telling myself to install one on my 4R.

Regarding an oil extractor, unless you have back problems (I blew out mine the other day.......urghhh) and are perfectly fit, use the traditional method and let gravity do its thing. I'm not completely convinced those extractors get EVERY drop out. I could be wrong.

You have to do a conventional change every other oil change anyway because of the leftovers.

A good test would be to use the extractor and when your convinced you got all the oil out, then pull the drain plug to see how much oil is still in there.
