Does my new to me 4runner have a spacer lift? And what is this black spray?

Still exploring my "new" 2008 4runner... (Love this forum BTW!) Finally put it on a vehicle lift this weekend to get a better look underneath and I noticed two things:

First, it looks like previous owner may have put spacer lifts at coils? We thought this 4runner sat higher than others we drove and have seen on the road since. At first we thought it may have been because it has big 265/70/17 tires on it. The shocks are stock and correct to a 4runner. The springs look really beefy too, but I didn't see any markings. This ride height is not a bad thing, just want to know what I've got.

Second, what the heck is all of this black stuff that looks sprayed on in places? When I crawled under it before buying, I thought it might have been wet road tar slung up off the tires- but now I'm thinking it may have been some sort of rust proofing? Thoughts?

Yup. Definetly spacer lift. The spray looks like tar like u said but could be someone just threw on some paint or something.

Yeah, interesting, the front looks like a preload spacer.

Maybe the paint is something to prevent rust?

looks specifically like a cornfed spacer lift, only company i know of that had white rear spacers

The spacer looks at least an inch thick... and per this forum, that would mean a overall 2" lift?

The fronts do look like a preload spacers, does it look lifted at all because the only thing you could accomplish is more preload on the springs. Unless I'm wrong… But maybe the "paint" could have been some one rollin on fresh asphalt. I'm always tryin to dodge that stuff.

It does look lifted, noticed it the first time we saw it, but at the time thought it was just the 265/70/17's

2" to 2.5" lift. I just installed a 2.5" spacer lift on mine and the front spacer was about 1" thick, so you're right about there. It's a very popular mod. Congratulations on getting the lift without having to mess with the springs and struts!

The black looks like someone sprayed POR-15 on areas that started to rust.

the black spray is just rubberized undercoating.
