Does sulphur smell go away on its own?

Yea I cannot smell the sulfur anymore. I have 73,000 miles on her and I bought it in June 2003. I also asked my wife about it, just in case I was imagining it. She confirms this as well.
That is great news! Unfortunately I am driving this vehicle about 2000 miles on my return trip home after purchasing it. The guy that I am buying it from is trying to get the TSB done at his local dealership in Jersey. If he is unsuccessful I may have to just live with it. so I am hoping that it does eventually dissipate on its own after a period of time. I had an ex girlfriend who owned a Mazda MX6, did the same thing,, eesh,, it sucked, haha,, Thanks for your input.
That is good to hear! Mine started smelling really bad around 5000 miles, although I don't know if that's due at least in part to the change to winter-formula gasoline. The smell came on as the weather got colder.
I really don't want to have the TSB done, because I hate the idea of having the dealer do that much work - there's always a chance they can break something else in the process.

The guy that I am buying it from took it to the dealership in Jersey yesterday. The service writer slyly told him that since the vehicle did not throw a code that nothing was wrong with it. Kinda sucks. I can't really force the seller to try and get it done. My last hope will be to try and take it to the dealership myself upon pickup and push them really hard to get it done. I have nothing to lose.

The TSB is if the customer complains of heavy sulfur smell. It says nothing about only comply with if it throws a code. When you pick it up take it to a dealer and tell them the sulfur smell is awful. Print a copy of the TSB and take it with you. As long as it is under 80,000 then it is covered under the Toyota Major Emissions Warranty. Also, make sure they reflash the computer AND change the converters or whatever it is they change(two sets of pipes). When I took mine in the guy told me they would reflash the computer and let me have it back to see if that fixed it and if not then they would order the other parts. Luckily the guy who would actually be performing the service said he was wrong and that both were to be done at the same time. Bottom line, go in there and insist that it is done. Dont let them try to wiggle out of it no matter how close you are to 80K.
I thought about doing it right before 80k, but then I heard some rumors of people getting worse fuel economy after it was done, so I decided not to do it. Honestly, it doesn't really matter to me. As long as I don't have the rear window rolled down when I rip on it, I am not bothered with it. It's other people behind me that have to deal with it.

RickyCRX - I've had this done about 2 years ago and no noticeable difference in gas mileage. After 3 years, I'm still averaging about 17mpg on my V6.

But you've also got a 2WD and I use my truck for commuting. You try driving in DC Metro traffic day in and day out and we'll see how your gas mileage is

Picked up the Vehicle in NY!, (pics coming soon!). I only noticed the smell when I was back in Texas and really steped on it and had the rear window down a bit. Surprisingly it was not that bad. Noticeable but not bad. Being that I live on The gulf coast we seem to always get similar smell coming from the ocean. I think I will be able to live with it.. Thanks for all the input!

so does the toyota dealership do it for free? i bought mine used and i don't have any warranty its about 30,000 miles and its an 05 sr5
First, you're still covered under a factory 3year/36k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on an '05 with 30k miles.
Second, there's a 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty on the engine/transmission, etc....
Third, the sulfur smell TSB can be done all the way up to 80k miles (I don't remember what the time limit is, but 80k is the mileage limit).
Oh, and yes, it's free.

The sulfur TSB must be done 96months after in service date or 80k, whichever comes first to be free. After then, you're out of luck.

how many model years does the TSB cover? My 06 SR5 has 12K and with the warm weather we have had here at the beach the past few days I have had all the windows down and have noticed very strong the sulphur smell.......also, link to the TSB?

I know of TSBs for the 2003-2005 models but I stopped keeping track after that. Do a search on the forums and you might find the TSBs.
