I have a 2008 SR5 Galactic Gray, 40200 miles, V6. Love it. Got it in April at 34k miles.

I've always, however, been intrigued by the V8's. Never drove one though ...... until tonight.

It is a 2008 Sport Galactic Gray, 34200 miles, V8. It was very nice and definitely a smoother, quieter, more powerful engine.

I could get the V8 for about $24k and trade the V6 for about $21 or 22k.

I'm seriously thinking about doing this trade. My neighbors will barely notice the difference.

Does this make any sense??

It prefer the v8. The one you're looking at is lower mileage (not much, but does make a difference) and being a Sport, is much more appealing. The Sport will have better handling with the XREAS system. For that price, I'd do it in a heartbeat IF I had the spare cash.
 
I have the V8 Sport Edition and I love it.

Wasn't looking for it. Happened to fall in my lap the day I had set aside to shop for it. It was 90 miles away in rural PA and I had already lined up 4 other serious contenders at closer dealers. Taken a look at 2 already.

I was so intrigued I drove up to PA and bought it on the spot. That was how nice it was. The engine is very smooth and responsive. Not sure what differences are between my 2005 and your 2008, but I don't think anything substantive. I was glad I decided to potentially "waste" my day and drive to PA to look.
 
Gas will soon be $5 per gallon. Unless you are towing 6k lb up hills, the V6 provides plenty of power.

This coming from a 4k boat tower.

+1. V8s arent really necessary unless you actually NEED the torque for towing. The V6 is plenty fast and gets better gas mileage. Theres a reason why they stopped producing the V8s.....If you wanna go fast get a corvette.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a friend looking at it today as well to check on any mech issues. The Sport does have a different look than my SR5 with the tubular side bars and roof rack. Also I remembered last night while driving it that it is full time awd.

All things to think about and I'm not fond of parting with $3k but I think I'll be happier with it so I'm leaning toward moving forward with the change.
 
When I bought mine there were two white ones side by side on the lot. One V6 and one V8, and they were pretty close in price, so it was a no brainer for me.

The V6 did have lower miles though.

I've driven a V6 since owning mine and I don't think I could ever have one. I just love the V8 so much.

The fact that these 4th gen 4Runners are the only 4Runner/Tacoma platform to ever come from the factory with V8's adds additional appeal in my eyes. Not being able to get a V8 in the 5th gens is a huge turnoff to me.

For $2-3K for a V8 Sport, I also would do it in a heartbeat. I've been looking for a second 4th gen with a V8, and they're getting harder to come by, not to mention the fact that they don't ever come down in price.

Nah. 1. China has a huge bubble that is about to burst. It has heavy inflation and it attempting to reign that in. China's economy is floated by demand from the west. The further economic woes of the western world have started to really show China's weakness. Namely, it cannot support it self on domestic demand. It is an export economy, and like every export economy before it; is about to have to address this.

China is the number 1 reason for fuel price increases. Its demand for fuel the past decade is largely responsible for continued fuel increases. This is going to flat line. I don't see it retreating much, but it will not be 5 dollars a gallon in the United States anytime soon. That is fear mongering from the GOP (the party I work for, by the way) to fear push more drilling. I support more drilling, but I know the rhetoric is just that.

Even if it's upwards of a $4k change, I think it would still be worth it. It makes night and day difference in my opinion. V8 all the way.

Plus, tubular rack and step bars FTW.
 
Financially...STUPID...But get what you want. Trading a car in every few years is the WORSE (after leasing) you can do financially. But it's your money.
 
I hate leases. They make sense to some people, but they are bad financially. Then again, pure numbers don't describe every situation and every desire.

Usually people don't understand you can negotiate residual during the leasing operation and just sign on the dotted line. So you end up needing to pay "more" to buy it out than if you had negotiated.

Yes, very stupid and I totally agree...... strictly in a financial sense. What makes it worse is that in my case, I've only had my current 4Runner for 11 months.

However, I need to be totally happy with it as I plan to keep this for a VERY long time and doing this now while the value of my current 4Runner is still as high as possible makes this more reasonable in my eyes.

In my wifes eyes, not as reasonable. She thinks I'm going through my mid-life crisis. Whatever.....

My opinion probably doesn't carry a lot of weight considering that I have not driven the V8 4Runner, however I have a GS400 which has a V8 and smooth as silk don't do it justice. I would imagine the same for the 4Runner V8.

Also if I had known prior to buying my V6 4Runner that it requires premium fuel, I would have bought the V8 instead (which does not require premium fuel). In other words the mpg difference is wiped out by the cost of premium fuel, so this is not even a relevant point to consider when choosing between the V8 annd V6.

Except that the V6 does not require premium.

The owners manual states this.

I too was taken aback by how smooth the V8 was. I didn't even know it was running at a light. This is why I'm considering this.
