Does This Make Sense?

So I brought my truck in for the noise the brakes were making when I started in the morning or when it was cold and the dealer told me it was rust on the rotors. The dealer told me that my truck seemed to have a bit more rust than other 4Runners they have seen, so they suggested that I have my rotors cut down and they will give me new brake pads. Now, my truck is 8 months old with 7,700 miles. I never heard of this. They also told me that the rust is caused by the damp summer air. and that since my truck is outside all of the time and not driven far distances during the week, it developed this rust. Does this make sense to anyone? Has anyone else experienced this or heard of this? I am thinking of driving it somewhere far and trying to burn off the rust.

Doesn't make sense to me, either.

We had a 1994 Concorde where it would get a bit of rust after washing, but a few minutes of driving and it was gone. I'd expect any other vehicle to do the same.

I have seen, and had several vehicles develop rust on the rotors after periods of inactivity, but in most cases, 10-15 min of stop-n-go driving with normal brake use is enough to clean it off. My '03 sometimes sits for 4-5 days outside with out use ( I have a daily commuter ride ) and I haven't seen any problems with rotor rust making noise. And with all the road salt they use in my area, rust
is our #1 growth product. Do you take it through deep or standing water often and then let it sit? Are you very near the ocean?

I do not take it through deep or standing water often. When it rains, it always floods on some roads I travel on. That is the only type of water I take it through. I do not live near the ocean. I am about 45 minutes from the Jersey shore.
