I've had the famous driveline clunk in my 4runner a few times. Is it actually hurting anything? I knew it was a common issue so I haven't done anything about it. Am I doing harm by leaving it alone? It doesn't really bother me if its not harming anything...

As far as anyone knows, it is OK and does not have a negative long term effect.

I don't understand why they haven't addressed this issue even in the 2009 t4rs.

Yup, kinda strange when Toyota knows EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT! They made a permanent fix with the GX via TSB. Weird....

They made an improvement... don't know if the GX owners would all agree it's a total fix.

I agree - Toyota does seem to be letting things slide. Another good example of that is the presence of TSB's that cover many model years, such as the sulfur smell in the exhaust and the Tacoma's weak rear leaf springs. Toyota knows these things are issues, but they are choosing to wait and see if the customer complains rather than making a correction in manufacturing, presumably because of the cost of the parts. The problem with that strategy is that some customers won't complain - they just won't buy another Toyota.
Toyota is still one of the most reliable brands of cars, but they didn't get where they are by simply being better than the competition. Toyota used to stand for quality, period. Now the mindset seems to be "as much or more quality than everybody else", which is a lower standard.

You know I just realized...every since I switch to Mobile 1 synthetic grease (no Moly)...I haven't noticed any driveline clunk in my '05...either that or maybe I've haven't been paying attention...but I pretty good at noticing such things.
Also, are you using aftermarket front wipers? ARe you getting a slight 'tap...tap...tap' noise coming from the corner of dashboard (seems like) on the passenger side? Well, you might go back to the OEM wiper/blades...that noise might go away like it did on my 4Runner. Strange but true...

Ford Broncos and Short bed regular cab F150 4x4s used to have that clunk as well. Maybe thats where toyota borrowed the design.
My dad's 98 Ranger has a severe case of the driveline clunk...apparently it is common in that model. He has learned to live with it, but there is a TSB for it...about putting some sort of special grease on the slip yoke.
If that particular grease can be found...maybe someone here can try it on their vehicle...

This is almost unbelievable!!! What the hell are they thinking??? Will be interesting to see if they issue a TSB for the LX570 like they did for the GX470. I had the TSB done about 2 years ago and the clunk is still dead (knock on wood
). I don't remember the old TLC/LX470 being afflicted with the clunk, was it?
