Does this starter need to be replaced? Pics included

So I took my starter out today because of grinding noises at start up and the contacts are worn but I looked at the gear and the ball bearings behind the gear. First, it looks like there are bearings missing as there are not a lot f bearings around the gear. Second, one KC the bearings has some sort of metal around it and I don't know if it broke off and is floating around inside or what? I might have to take this starter in to Toyota and let them look at it. I want to keep my oem starter but not sure if I can rebuild it or have to buy a new one? I have not seen vids or write ups on rebuilding the ball bearings and other things in the starter besides the contacts. If anyone can chime in here I would appreciate it.

That bearing looks toast. That white thing looks like the seal that keeps the grease inside. You should be able to buy the gear portion of that starter.

The clutch assembly if you have a 1.8kw starter has the flywheel gear as part of it and costs 69 at a dealer.

You may need more than that though.

When I had issues with my starter I called the stealership about it and they directed me to a local starter shop. Took it in and they rebuilt the thing on the fly for $60. Might start with a google search for a local shop.

Ironically I just took one apart last night. Super easy to take apart. You can order the bearings online or from a bearing shop.

You will need a press to remove the bearings, but super easy.
