Does VSC work while braking?

Like my Title asks, does VSC work while braking?

I hit a patch of slippery highway-snowcovered....

And the highway was uphill, then downhilll, up...down...etc.

Every time I hit the brake (made I was overreacting?)...the rig would start to shift a bit...mainly when I was going downhill...

same here. this am lots of ice. on simple braking VSC chatters like Sarah's knees. simple maneuvers can end up being interesting ones. there used to be a thread on this but I could not locate it.

Yes it does work while braking. I agree, there's times (particularly at initial brake application) when it feels as though the VSC is hurting more than helping. It's not it's just different than we'd expect.

As drivers we were taught to use pump the brakes gently. With VSC a steady application of brakes works better, much better.

Good question. Not sure about the newer VSC systems, but when Toyota VSC first came out, i do NOT believe that it worked when you press the brakes. There was much discussion about this on Edmunds Forum many moons ago. BMW (and Mercedes??) stability control do continue to work when you brake...BMW has this for sure, i am not sure about others.

When you brake, i am not sure if you want VSC to come on. I know that Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) is important when you brake because it shifts braking power according to cargo load and traction.

That is probably your ABS working, rather than VSC?? Remember, tires make a huge difference in snow and ice...so, technology helps, but it won't be able to do much if there is no traction.

VSC isn't really a braking control system, although it sometimes uses the brakes to do its job. It's designed to help you keep control of the car and manage sudden steering changes.

I found this on the Toyota New Zealand site:

The system helps to ensure stable cornering performance through the operation of the VSC actuator that provides braking control, and the throttle actuator that controls the engine output. Based on signals from the various sensors, such as the yaw rate sensor and the G sensor, the ECU determines if the vehicle is understeering or oversteering and outputs control signals to the actuators. These actuators then decrease the engine output and/or apply the brake(s) to the front or rear wheel(s) to reduce the vehicle

Wow, I am going to try it some now... I have no doubt that GM's stabilitrak hangs with you while the brakes are applied in the '06 'vette. My Mom's Sonota seems to also. Great topic!

The VSC light was on during the chattering going about 4 mph even with the brake pressure off. hmmm.

I never heard or felt or saw the light turn on...I just noticed a slight "sliding" feeling and I would correct the vehicle myself...I guess I don't know how sensitive the sensors are...I have X-Ice tires so they grip like crazy...but I did feel a slight..well...WOBBLE once in a while when I panic braked....

I guess this winter, I'm gonna find a field or a parking lot and really figure out how the VSC works...cause right now any slight movement and I basically try to self correct myself.
