Does your trans do this?

My 04 v6 sr5 140k has an intermittent issue when accelerating from a stop or from a slow speed. The issue is there is a delay between pressing the gas and the trans engaging. This happens 30-50% of the time, engine revs for a bit, less than a second then lurches when it engages.

I've read about a TSB for a similar problem with the 2010s but with a delay of up to several seconds.

Anyone else have this issue? Cause? I find I hard to believe this is normal since it isn't constant. My extended warranty is up soon and I'm a bit worried.

This is something that happens when fluid is low. Might be your issue, may be internal leaks or a badly restricted filter.

Suggest you get a fully tranny fluid exchange done if your vehicle has never had one before. I just had ours done at 50k by the dealer because we tow with our 4Runner. Having the fluid exchanged is like buying a $270 tranny insurance policy.

What about the color and odor? Does it smell burnt?

Also, you may want to drop the pan and check the filter.

Someone posted a similar symptom 1-2 mont ago. I think he did a few drain & frills on the trans and it helped ?

Try searching a bit more, maybe it will come up in search and have his solution.

Before you go spending $ on a trans or something, do a couple drains and refills, it may take a couple to help resolve. Not cheap but cheaper than diagnostic work or replacing big $ items.

As most other posts will note, don't do a power flush on the trans at those miles too risky.

Thanks for the tips. I'm coming up on the end of my platinum warranty so I think I might take it in to the stealership in case it's something major. Fluid looks good, no bad smell, normal looking color.

So right now they are telling its the drive shaft and yoke, ordering me a new one then they are going to look at the trans, I HAVE FIVE DAYS LEFT ON MY LIMITED WARRANTEE. I will know for sure tomorrow.

My 05 sport does the same thing once in a while. It also does not like to drive under 40 if I slow down it vibrates a little. I'm going to check the transmission fluid when I get home. I just bought the damn thing 3 weeks ago!

I am experiencing a similar issue. I feel like the tranny jerks just a bit from a stopped position after applying acceleration. I had the tranny checked and its full of fluid. I don't think the tranny is slipping, its more of a small jerk and performs fine. I am thinking maybe its the u-joint/driveline. It has 145,000 miles on it.

They replaced U Joint, drive shaft (there was a lot of play in it), and topped off transfluid. I only had to pay my deductible, the difference was not particularly noticeable on the way home, I will let y'all how it goes as the week goes on.

I'm experiencing the same issue. I noticed this started when my gas cap stopped sealing and I still need to replace it. It was the end of winter & now that it’s summer the gas cap started sealing again but it still requires replacement. I’m noticing the shift issue more recent now that it’s getting colder again. I should be able to replace the cap this wknd. I am only assuming the trans has a vacuum line as both scenarios happened simultaneously with the gas cap & trans shifting.

Just a thought & I could be way off…

Dealer couldn't find anything wrong. But I am getting a new lumbar motor and wiper switch no charge thanks to the PO having an extended platinum warranty I was as to transfer when I bought it. To bad I only have about 200 miles left on it.
