Dog/Overland Setup Ideas

Hi all,

So im picking up my new to me t4r today and was looking online for ideas on how to set up a shelving/drawer system. So far im thinking leave the "trunk" for fridge/shelves/gear and then giving half the backseat to the dog with some more gear there on the other half.

What kind of setups do you run for overlanding with a dog? She will need her space and will also sleep there so on an overland trip it will be 100% her safe place sort of thing. She is very good traveling and lays down for the most part until we get to city speeds then the windows can come down.

Just looking for ideas really, the key is that the setup have what i mentioned above or close to it at least.

I did a search but didn't find anything to help me as it was mostly about putting a dog in there without all the gear.

I personally just let my dog have the ability to roam free amongst the extra space, usually with both seats folded down and his bed across the middle area (doubles as half of my sleeping pad sometimes). I do remember seeing an Overland Bound interview where a 5th Gen had a very thorough setup with a small dog: https://youtu.be/dz0kOuMlS9A although IMHO I'd really recommend more room than what was given there.

Cooler on the left side, GSD on the right side. I chose staggered heights because I wanted a deep drawer option still. She's only 65-70lbs, so she's not a big GSD. She fits well and likes to stick her head out the rear. I put a more comfy pad down for longer trips.

I remove the seat bottom cushion behind the driver seat and mount my fridge there. It's always strapped down with turnbuckles and such. Then, I remove the larger bottom seat cushion behind the front passenger and place a dog bed there. Both second row seat upright stays in place and acts as a barrier of sorts. All camping gear and such go in the cargo area.

When two dogs go with me, I switch around the dog placement and the camping gear placement. The fridge always stays in the same spot.

When i have my 12 yo daughter with me, chances are, the Kamparoo gets towed, so the dogs go in the cargo and all camping gear go on the trailer.

When my daughter starts to invite her friends to go camping with us, the fridge will be sharing the cargo area with the dog(s).

I don't have a cargo drawer system in the cargo area yet but will be building something in 2018, I'm hoping.

Ya, I agree. My dog is also 60lbs so some space is needed. Im liking the idea to just leave her half the backseat so far... folded up or down. Then I can focus on gear in the trunk.

This is pretty nice, looks solid too. Then the dog gets to use the safer back window.
