Dog ramp recommendations

Well Bodie, my 11 year old Akita has arthritis in his hips and knees along with degeneration in the spin. At this time he is able to walk but is slow to get up so currently I’m of the mindset his quality of life is still positive. He is on meds now and is started laser therapy. Anyway, I’m familiar with this so I know the clock is ticking and I want him to enjoy what time he has left and be able go places. He hates being picked up and at 140 pounds loading isn’t easy but I don’t want him trying to jump in and out. I’m just looking for any recommendations for a stable ramp that can support his size so he can get in and out without stressing his back joints.

[MENTION=288683]Flea7907[/MENTION] petstep is a pretty good option i think. haven't used others to compare against, but it is pretty long for a relatively easy climb on older dogs, has rubberized ribbing for good grip, and is sturdy for large dogs. it is quite heavy tho.

If you want to just make the in and out of the trunk a lot easier, check out the Twistep. I've used a bunch of different step and ramp products over the last few years and this is one of my favorite honestly. Made life easier for my Great Pyrenees when he got geriatric and am now using it for my Tibetan Mastiff who is 7 and my Newfoundland who is young but tends to slam his body into my bumper .

Where do you store the ramp during the commute?

folds in half, usually sideways laid down against the lift gate, bungee'd to the rear tie-downs holding it in place

Thanks for the post, it is very informative, as my 11.5 year old lab is starting to slow and at 90 lbs she is a bit heavy to lift into the back. I think the ramp looks good, as I know she would not do the step thing.

Ordered the ramp, I like the twist step but he struggles with normal stairs so I’m limited to a ramp.

Good luck; ramps work well but are just a little more unwieldy to transport around.

You can always get a nice roof rack to strap it onto (hah).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dog ramp I can use for my dog to get into the back seat from the side door? I know there are several options for entering through the cargo hatch, but because of the way I have the truck set up for traveling, entering by the side door is easiest.

Hard to say what is best for you without knowing how big and the weight of your dog, is he old and or feeble, many ramps are good for small dogs but it has to be heavy duty for large dogs.

If you have a small dog, 25lbs or less this folding ramp may work for you, but it's not good for larger/heavier dogs.

if the dog can do steps, theres several folding steps that turned up in a search. I bought a set a few years ago when my last dog was getting too old to jump in herself, but she didnt like them. Some do, some dont.

The ones I posted should work for side door, but the second one is the only one rated for at least 60 lbs., there are also others out there you can find by doing a google search, the requirement for using one at the side door would be the width, so grab a tape measure and see what is the widest one that will work for you, and get one with the highest weight rating.

Just an FYI, Chewy the pet supply company seems to have a wide variety of ramps, so a search of their website would be a good idea.

The one I bought was for the side door, theres no rear access in mine. It was about $300 when I bought mine, when I looked after seeing your post, similar looking ones were available for much less. Mine was ordered based on total rise needed, meaning how many steps it would have.
