Doing a Tune-Up of Sorts

Hey guys getting really to do some tune-up maintenance this weekend and trying to get my list together. So far I am doing:

Oil/filter change
Spark plugs/wires
Clean MAF and throttle body (May do deckplate mod while it's apart and if enough time)
Change front/rear diffs fluid
Change transfer case fluid
Grease drivetrain

That's all my wallet can afford right now due to the tires and timing belt getting done this week.

Later on will do:

Transmission fluid
Coolant flush
Power steering fluid
Brake fluid (probably not til I change brakes down the road)
Fuel Filter

Am I missing anything?

You got it pretty well covered. I would also inspect your serpentine belts. Look at your drums in the rear and make sure you don't have any leaky axle seals. Other than that, you probably have already made sure the timing belt and water pump were replaced at some point. If not, I would do those (or have them done for ~$6-700).

Oh yea I do have the O2 sensor already, I could throw that on. Shew gonna be a long (but fulfilling) Saturday!

A yes timing belt hasn't been done in 100k miles, water pump looks like never. Both with all belts/seals getting done on Wed. My wallet is saying enough already! :)

May i ask how you could tell the water pumps never been done?

Simply by the previous owner stating that he had never had it replaced and the records from the 1st owner show that the timing belt was replaced but nothing on the water pump.

I have a 98 with 246,000 miles.

Change the transmission fluid by opening up the drain plug and draining the pan. I do this every 10,000 miles. It is easy, it is cheap, and it is fast. I recommend doing it !

I also want to get a new 02 sensor but when I went to Autozone it asked for a front O2 and a rear O2. Should I get both replaced or is one more preferable than the other? I have 147,000 on mine. Thanks guys.

I'd just do the front one. The only function of the rear sensor is to throw the P0420 code if the cats are not doing their job. So if MIL is not on, no need to change rear sensor.

I'm still a newb. MIL?

Thank you! Anyone else's opinion?

Here you go with all you'll ever need lol

MIL is malfunction indicator light.

I would add:

-Check/replace (if needed) struts/shocks
-Check/replace brakes and brake lines (1997 Limited 4Runner's brake lines were near failure and my trusty mechanic Bob tipped me off to their needing replacement ASAP)

-Check/replace all drive belts
-Check/replace timing belt, water pump, etc
-Check/replace bulbs
-Check/replace ball joints, tie rod ends, steering components, sway bar bushings, etc.
-Check/replace starter (I had a Denso reman installed to replace factory starter at 175,000 miles. I considered just repairing starter solenoids but for $200 parts and labor I'd rather have peace of mind when we start or 4Runner especially living in north WI. And now it just sounds SO much better when starting, like a Lexus haha.), alternator
-Check for rust on undercarriage, bumpers, body panels, frame and if you live in or near Canada I would highly recommend Krown or Rust Check in the US.

Other than that, long live the 4Runner!

Didn't get everything done, ran out of time. Got a quick question though. Plan on doing a seafoam treatment, should I do this before or after changing out everything (PCV, fuel filter, O2, ect.). Also getting all the belts, timing, water pump, t-stat and seals replaced in a couple days. Will it matter if I did this before or after seafoam?

Thanks!

Oil/Filter, timing belt, WP, T-stat, all belts and seals, spark plugs/wires, drivetrain greased, MAF, throttle body cleaned all done! Shew!

Doing front/read diff fluids, transfer case, O2 sensor, PCV, deckplate mod :D this weekend!

Will do the coolant, trans drain and fill, fuel filter, steering rack guide and bushings upon my return from a much needed trip.

She's coming along nicely!

Maintenance didn't go as planned. Spent all morning on a wild goose chase for the right parts. By the time I got started, couldn't get the slightly rounded fill plug of the diff off. By that time I was tired and frustrated so called it a day.

Did manage to get the PCV valve replaced and installed the intake tube from my free K&N kit to the factory airbox. Just waiting for my deckplate parts!
