Here's a real beaut of an electrical problem on our 2004 V8 2WD 4Runner which is used as a tow vehicle for my racecar. The car was still under extended warranty and this jewel took the dealer MANY hours of diagnostic time:
Problem: Intermittent blown 10-amp fuse on the "Dome" circuit. This circuit includes dome lights, door remote, guage "memory", clock memory, and other low-amp stuff.
Fuse kept blowing for no apparent reason. First pass through the dealer resulted in their replacing 2 body computers which ran about $800. The dealer proclaimed the problem fixed, and we went on our merry way. About a month later, same deal. Fuse blown. Back to the dealer again. This time they kept the car for almost a week.
Several tech's tried to diagnose the problem and they were about ready to give up, when one of the other techs overheard the conversation and promptly offered the solution: He calmly opened the driver's door and flipped down the sun visor. BANG! the fuse blew.
Seems this is a problem not only with the 4Runner, but also in some Camry's and Sequoias. The visors have a wire inside that is subject to abrasion against the metal rod that runs through the visor.
Solution: Dealer changed out the visor and malady disappears!
Just in case you run into the same problem, check the Visor! Whoda thunk it!!
