Don't ignore your battery light

My battery light came on a few days ago, in my head I assumed it was the alternator but also figured it might me something dumb like dirty terminals. Anyway, I was off from work tomorrow and figured I'd take it in then to see what the deal was. This morning it started fine and I went to an appt. at work, when I left and started it the crank was slow but it started so I knew it was the alternator but I needed to get home to change for another appt. Almost immediately the radio shut off then a few mins later the tach stopped then the speedo and I pulled off bcz I knew what was happening and as I did the PS went out and she died on the side of the road :rip:

The moral of the story is don't be dumb like me and wait when you know what the problem is. I looked on the forum the other night at the battery light threads so I pretty much knew everything it could be and I still thought I could tempt fate.:frusty:

Something similar happened to me once in 2008. Luckily I broke down in the street in front of a NAPA. Replaced the battery and was good for a few years but still killed batteries every 18 months.

Have you replaced the battery negative to chassis cable with 4G ?

I'm not saying you must do the Big3 but just replacing that one cable will help a lot.

In 2010 I thought I needed a new alternator, I even bought one but never installed it.

I did the Big3 (see my thread) and replaced the battery with a Costco 780 CCA battery and my voltage has been 14.3v @ the ScanGuage ever since.

In fact I'm still on my original alternator at 227k miles.

Just to be clear, you are talking about the short wire (few inches long) that comes of the neg terminal and grounds to the body, right?

Well, I did the upgrade this weekend. Very easy, and now my radio stays on as I'm starting the motor.

My Battery died on my on the 4th. Went in on the 5th to get a new one and there was a line of people ALL getting batteries. Must be battery week.
