Just got back from the bank and the 2 places that people are washing conterfeit money through is the gas stations and car washes, makes sence, both have foreign employees who speak 3 words of english and carry wads of cash and they have no feeling in their hands cause of all the chemicals;):

Seems people are filling up SUV with premium, a tank could cost an easy 50 bucks and they are paying with fake money so thats how you do it:arrow:

Esso SpeedPASS. :D smart. safe. simple.

Speedpass rocks.
I use plastic almost every time. I keep the recipt too EVERY time!
(I like to be able to prove I DID pay!)

I always use credit card . I hate going inside and pay there because I never remember pump number so it is much easier and faster to pay at pump......

I think that when I'll go to fill up my 4R by the end of the week I will pay 50$ and not for premium but regular !!! It's getting crazy again..:(

I always use my debit card at the pump. I like not having to go inside. One thing I noticed around here is when you use your debit card to get gas they hold an additional $30-$50 for a few hours after you pump it  . Kind of strange. I talked to my Credit Union about it and they said it's a saftey precaution a lot of gas stations do because of the amount of people that gas-and-go. Another explanation I got was that it's to make sure you don't pump more gas then the amount of money you have in your checking account. Not sure if all gas stations do this or not. I've only caught it with one so far.

Alot of restaraunts do the same thing. If you pay by debit they automatically hold out an extra 20% thay way when its approved the server is garaunteed up to at least that much in tip, if the customer was to leave that amount.

I was told that the server gets short changed alot becuase there is not enough money is some people's account to cover a tip when they pay by debit.

At the end of the night when all transactions are cashed out the actual amount you left will be reflected on your account. Sometimes it takes about a day or so.

That's a scary thought about them holding 20% out on your debit purchases.

I was under the impression that your debit purchase is binding agreement and is the same as cash to the vendor. So if you bought $50 worth of gas, and only had $30 in your account, you would get popped the other $20 by your bank, PLUS the overdraft charges.

Am I not correct in thinking this way?

as for the conterfeit cash at gas stations....now I finally have a place to dispose of those one million dollar bills that I got as a gag gift for my birthday.

"can I get my change in fake 20's please" :naughty:

I use a credit card where I get 5% back on all my gasoline purchases. That takes $2.20/gallon and makes it $2.09/gallon! Well worth it to me especially when you talk about a total savings of close to $20/month after all my fill ups.

PS...get 1% back on all purchases...that is why EVERYTHING that I buy/month goes on the credit card. All my bills/food/gas/fun go on the card. If only I could put my $2000 mortgage on my credit card. Then at the end of the month, I write a check to them for the total amount and I end up saving close to $60 on my bills and gas. That is essentially a free cell phone bill!

Airlines also hold more money in your account if you use a credit/debit card. I recently purchased ariline tickets and they held so much that my card was denied at the gas pump. I was irrate because it was a new card.

As far as the restaraunts go, The reason *some* hold an extra 15-20% is like this:

Lets say your bill is 40.00, and you have 42.00 in your checking account. All is fine and dandy until you leave a 15% tip tacked on to the 40.00 bill using your card as well. Now your up to 46.00.

Your going to come up short and the server gets shorted on their tip, and your card will probably get denied. So when they swipe your card they approve it for 48.00 instead of 40.00 that way the server is guaranteed to get *at least 20%* if you choose to give that much. Now if you decide to give a 15% tip then at the end of the night when they cash in all transactions your bill is actually 46.00 instead of 48.00 and the bank automatically corrects itself for the proper amount.

I hate to go inside as well, and use a credit card when I can, but the lowest priced gas in my area doesn't have pumps that you can use your card in. Fortunately, they take checks :)

Here is something you can do if you have to pay cash. If you pay with a twenty, fold it in half and tear three little holes in the center. That way if you get change back, for say a five or ten, you have a some proof when you call the police.

I did this when I used to pay cash while traveling, because I had the problem of getting change for a ten when I paid with a twenty. I got nowhere because there was no proof. After the cop left, I waited and told the jerk t hat I was going to wait and beat the difference out of him, no matter how long it took. He reached into the cash drawyer and paid me back. From that day on, I rep three little holes in bills when paying cash.

Regarding authorizations over the amount:

Restaurants and gas stations do not "hold" the amount on credit/debit, the way that hotels do.

When your card is ran, it dials the bank and "authorizes" the card to be used for a specific amount. Usually it is "authorized" for an additional 20% at a restuarant, but this varies by state, establishment, and bank.

At this point, NO money has been taken from your account, however most banks will immediately show a pending charge for the amount authorized becuase they assume the amount valid until the settled batch comes through. At some point (usually the end of the day), they will settle all of the open batches with the banks for the proper amount.

This is why you will sometimes see multiple charges at a restaurant if your card was charged incorrectly the first time and had to be re-run. Once the amount is settled, your bank will reflect the proper amount (most banks will do this within 1-2 business days).

In short, the bank is the one that is "holds" the charge, not the restaurant, gas station, etc..
