Don't waste money at the dealer for keyless entry

Got my 2001 4runner last week. By far the "nicest" vehicle I've ever owned and I thought, now is the time in my life when I have to start spending $$ for everything on it.

Drove to the dealer to confirm that she originally came with keyless entry system. She did, and like a dumb a$$ I bought the remote there from the parts department. Mistake #1. $160 incl. tax from dealer, vs $80 or less on ebay (as I learned today).

Then they told me that service department had to program it. I asked, "this has to be done by the dealer, cannot be done by anyone else" and they said "yes, must be done by the dealer." Outright lie, but I believed it, mistake #2. $85 wasted on that, when I could have done it myself in 5 minutes.

I have been reading this forum for weeks, why didn't I check here before I threw $165 down the dealership toilet???? This forum has already saved me in a couple other places.

Hopefully someone else will google this and save their $$$.

Just so you are aware:

The $80 remote (can be had for $70 usually) only has the two buttons for lock and unlock and lack the rear window button.

The $165 can be had for $110-$120 if you have the buddy discount.

the unlock /lock /panic/window down remote can usually be found for like 30 on atlanta Craigslist.

I watched ebay for a few weeks and snatched two key fobs for under $20 each.

I got a brand new OME key fob for like $25 off ebay and they had great service to boot! Anybody who knows how to program one can do it in about 30 seconds. If you don't know how it may take about 5 minutes.

I just wonder how people got by before the internet.

I've been fighting with a stalling problem on my (newer) power washer for months. Dealer was ignorant, the mfg help line usless.

Finally found out on a forum there was an "issue" with the gas cap (not venting correctly/not a recall/but an admitted "issue" by the manufacturer) that those who should have known about (like the manufacturers 1-800 support line) were clueless about.

What kind of powerwasher? Mine has been doing that as well, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why... Runs for about 20 min fine then stalls and wont start, or if it does, it only runs a minute or so.

Forums are an amazing tool!

It surprises me more manufactures don't troll forums for feed back, if they did you wouldnt have these amazing "features" that anger people across 3 generations of a single product ...lol

It's amazing what the dealers di before forums. A few years ago I had a Mazda with the electronic security in the key. The dealer refused to believe that all I wanted was the key for my car and not he 200 buck programming. They kept sating that they were the only ones who could do it. I felt like taking them into the parking lot and doing the programming right in front of them

I would definitely take the write-up on how to program it on your own to the dealer and demand your money back. They can't/shouldn't stand by their techs if they are completely lying to you. If you can prove it, get the refund.

You need a HYQ1512Y, like this

And this is how to program them:

Step 1 - Start with drivers side door open and unlocked, key out

Step 2 - put key completely into ignition (do not turn), then pull out.

Step 3- with door still open, lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 4 - close door then open door.

Step 5 - lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 6 - put key completely into ignition, turn to the ON position then pull key out (you will now hear the door locks lock then unlock a couple of times)

Step 7 - press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time for about 2 seconds

Step 8 - then press just the lock button for one second.




EDIT: Actually, since you have a 98, I'm not sure which fob you need. Better ask a dealer. Just don't buy it from them.
