Dont you hate when some amateur (girlfriend, brother, etc) slams your rear hatch down closed. Even if they know, or even after you tell them to just set it down slow to let itself close on its own?

I dont know about you, but that makes my blood boil.

Only you should gently feed Eleanor her tailgate, allowing her to grasp it from your hands, locking it safely!!!:arrow:
 
hehe that's why I always open and close the tailgate, nobody else. I don't give people my keys to get stuff from my truck. I go get it for them. What's scary is that some people hold the keys in their hand while closing the tailgate with that same hand! imagine all the scratches! so yea, I even try to open and close the doors for people most of the time.
 
Yup, I had it happen once and I cringed. Now, only my dad an I close the tailgate while pushing on the license plate so as to not touch the paint.
 
I would surely do the same thing. In addition, I always try to park my 4Runner next to a late model cars. In some popular parking area, I park my 4Runner between two cars already there since they are there already and I may leave before them. The chance to get scratch on side door can be minimized.
 
I hate it too. I actually did it myself recently but only because the rear window was open and i didnt realize it was easier to close with the window open. Needless to say i had to caress her a bit cause i def hurt her :D

I am guilty....I have slammed mine shut a few times, especially if the rear window is down. When it is slammed, it just closes all the way; the auto latch makes a sound but does not do anything.
I should probably be more gentle but I have always driven pick-up trucks and used the heck out of them.....hard to brake rough habits.

Don't you mean ex-mechanic and ex-gf? j/k That would be grounds in my book to leave them behind, especially after fair warning.
 
No offense to anyone on this board, but I find it funny that one thread will talk about how tough the 4runner is people will post pics of off-roading. Then another thread will talk about the horrors of slamming a tailgate or hood, as if that is going to do any more damage than rock crawling?

My understanding of the rear hatch is that slamming it shut will not hurt anything, that the motor is simply a safety feature in case the hatch is not shut all the way--does anyone know about this?
 
remember this is a 4Runner? If it can't take things like that, get a GMC... Just kidding... Honestly though... Don't you think if the 4Runner can handle going off-road and pulling 7000 lbs it can handle someone slamming the tailgate shut or slamming the door a little harder than usual?
 
i doubt its going to hurt the truck, but very annoying nevertheless. my g/f has done it a few times AFTER I told her not to. she got a smack upside the head.

But if you can prevent one abuse then your truck will still be better for it. Over time constantly slamming a door will degrade it's performance. Open and close the doors on older cars and compare the driver's to the passenger's door and in most cases the driver's door will be looser and harder to close. I know 3rd gen doors are pretty light and I hate when people slam them since it only takes a mild push and the door closes fine.

Off roading is more of a strain on easily replaceable parts that are going to wear and if I can prevent damage or undo wear by just asking a person to not slam my doors then guess what i'm going to do?
 
Yes, but I think my baby is just like my wife. I know she's tough and can take it (because she puts up with me) but I also know I have to treat her gently or else...
 
LOL I agree with everyone on here. I didnt think it would hurt it too much. This is my second 4runner, and it only has happened once. That will be the last time. I need to be gentle with her just like everyone else said.
 
I was never to impressed with the Town Car inspired electric closing feature they put on the rear hatch, if it was to open and close like the RX then fine but I really don't like it, it's a useless feature that does nothin but put an extra motor in the vehicle that only adds weight and slows it down and uses up my gas, and it will eventually break.

In the owners manual it says not to slam the door cause it will wear out and eventually break the motor;):

But I always get a kick out of the salesman showing people the showroom model and they slam the back door and the customer goes look you don't need to slam it and the salesman just looks dumbfounded;):
 
I like to show off the auto-lock feature with my passengers. It happened three times this year with my friends. After loading their luggages in the trunk I gently closed the lift gate. They warned me of it not being closed all the way BUT before they can finish their sentences they here the "click". They were all impressed by it especially when told that it was standard. And believe it or not, many salesman doesn't know of this feature and many other like coated winshield, plastic gas tanks and standard tow hitch. The auto-lock feature is a nice touch since I usually have my two year old asleep in the back and thus prevent me from slamming the gate shut. Now if only I can close the rear (gate) window with my remote.:D

I never heard of this. The only things I've heard recently about the windshield on this forum are complaints about cracks.


Also want to thank EDGE for the info on not slamming the rear hatch. I thought I read somewhere that closing the gate hard would not harm the motor, but this certainly isn't the first (or last) time I've been wrong. I don't abuse the rear gate, maybe use it once a week, but I've forgotten on more than one occasion to gently shut it.
 
The glass coating is called Hydrophyllic (yes there has been some discussion about the a mistranslation)

It is suppose to be on the Front windshields and side windows, but I question the windshield coating.
