Door edge gaurds, no good.

This is my first rejected mod! I order a set of Toyota factory color matched door guards. They are made of steel and for the front doors only. After fitting the passenger one I took it off and tossed them in the garbage. The top is open and could scratch someone. It also would be a magnet to collect dirt and cause rust. They also don't hold very tight and came loose the first time a nudged them.

I liked the idea, but the implementation is terrible.

Hmm...I have them on my LE and they are very tight and no sharp edges at all. Mind you I had them installed by the dealer...did you?

You are not alone. I did obviously the same - returned it back to a dealer. After having them sitting in my garage for couple month and constantly thinking if I should put them on or not, I came to the conclusion that I can permanently damage clear coat and it doesn't worth taking that risk.

my door guards look great and are performing their function as expected. No looseness or issues at all. Mine are on a 2011 TE

Don't have them on mine but the one the dealership had on the showroom floor looked like it fit perfectly

Installation is very straight forward, hold them in position and tap them all the way on with a rubber mallet. Impossible to do wrong. There isn't any adhesive or clip points, they stay put by just compression. The problem is that when you tap them, they open up and since it's not spring steel it looses a lot of the compression that is supposed to hold it in place.

Also, as I mentioned, they look like they could scratch someone or catch on clothing and would give dirt and water a safe place to start rust ( the small gap at the top which isn't painted as well). Here's a close up of the top (right next to the door handle).

Just fyi mine went on as described and have functioned as they should. No complaints from me.

Mine were not rough on the top. Yours appear unfinished.

My TE came with factory ones and they don't seem or look like anything you've described

You should try the paint protection film door edge. I have that on my front doors. They're clear and not noticeable.

Thread revival!

This thread made me question purchase of my genuine Toyota edge guards originally. However having used them for nearly a month, they are are awesome. They are not jagged and fit very snugly. You have to make sure you install them correctly but it was my first mod and I did not have to purchase any tools I already did not own. FWIW.

The best part is when my door makes connection with stuff, it is a relief that I can just change out a couple dozen dollar part vs a couple thousand dollar door panel. But so far they look to take a hit well. I am very happy with the purchase and the mod.
