Door Lock Dazzled

I have had absolutely no problems with my door locks until yesterday. Now every time I try to lock they either dont move at all or seem to attempt to lock. The door buttons jump a bit but do not actually lock. If I lock all the doors manually the remote still will not unlock the doors. I can lock/unlock the front dooirs and tailgate with the key but thats it.
So any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
My 4runner is a 2000 SR% with 240,000 on the clock,,,, but she is in very nice shape,,, except for the infamous "rusty" frame.

Sounds like you are using an aftermarket remote start/alarm remote?

When you say you try and lock the doors manually, do you mean with the power lock button? Or by pushing down the tab on the door?

From past experience, typically the power locks that come with the 4Runner are not your issue, its the aftermarket equipment (alarm or remote start) that are installed less then perfect.
 
I talking about the factory set up.. I can push all the buttons down by hand buyt when I use either the door switch or remote all locks dont unlock or lock

Did you check if there IS such a fuse before sending the OP on a wild goose chase?

Guess what? There isn't.

The door lock circuit is powered off the 30A POWER fuse (which also would knock out windows and moonroof), the 10A ECU-IG (which would also knock out a slew of other stuff) and the 15A MPX-B fuse, which also would knock out rear window and rear defroster.)

I'd start with the bundle of wires in the harness between liftgate and body. A broken or shorted wire there can keep the whole system from operating (very common). By any chance, does your Door Open light stay on? A bad signal from one door switch can do the same thing.

OP asked for suggestions. That was the most logical suggestion and as you now have shown there are 3 separate fuses that can control the door locks. Has the OP even tried the back window? Or the moon roof. And who uses the defrost in the middle of July. Very little info in original post as to what was and was not working specifically. Just stated door locks don't work with switch or factory remote. Leads to immediate power problem as alarm just replicates what the door lock switch is already doing i.e. Sending a negative pulse to the door lock motors. Not trying to send anyone on a wild goose chase just trying to help like everyone else.

Every thing works in the truck perfectly.... its just the power locks sometimes unlock and lock and other times they don't.... sometimes its just the front of just the rear... or any combination.....checked all the door jamb switches and all the windows work fine..doesn;t matter if i use the remote or the door switches
 
Might be temperature related, my drivers door does this on really hot days on both the remote and the arm rest switch. Almost like it gets stuck either up or down if its high 90's/100's. If it was the remote alone I'd suggest seeing if its the batteries dying.
 
Sounds to me like the actuators themselves are the issue. If they weren't locking with a positive sound that you could hear from a few feet away, then they are probably on the way out. I just rebuilt all 5 actuators in my wife's Land Cruiser because of the same issue. Locks would work once or twice and then they would barely move if they attempted to at all.


The first thing to check after the fuses (doubtful since you have no other symptons), is to make sure you have power to the actuator itself when you hit the button.

The fact that they are trying to move at all means you've probably got 12v going to the actuator.

I think it's time to open up the door and make sure you have power to the actuator. If you do, then the actuators have gone bad.

It's not suprising to see all 5 go bad at the same time. If you use the remote to unlock the doors most of the time, then you are most likely unlocking all doors every time. In addition, when you take off with an unlocked door, the vehicle locks the door. When you stop and put the shifter in park, all doors unlock.

Tear into a door and report back. I'm wondering if the 4runner uses the same type actuator that my Land Cruiser does. If so, I can point you to a link to purchase the little motor that goes inside the actuator itself.

I've read enough posts with similar issues to say this needs a much more definitive answer. I'm interested in your motor swap solution, I think someone (maybe you) posted some pictures previously on a different thread. I recently experienced this same failure on a very hot day, but by the time I got home it was working fine. I may have to load some tools and be prepared to disassemble my door in a random parking lot to confirm the actuators are failing. Post the link to the motors, and or pictures of the repair. We can be heroes, just for one day.

The locks will do this same thing if the key is left in the ignition to prevent you from locking yourself out. I wonder if the switch that senses the key has been removed is working properly.

Just as a test, put the key in the ignition and try to lock the driver's side door with it open (like you were getting out and leaving the truck) and see if it does the same thing.
 
ok... gotta try that...... I am wondering if the no ground/bad ground issue may be the problem.... also what is the deal with the fuse box defect

Without seeing a 4runner actuator taken apart, i've got no way to know if this is even a solution. You do have to break open the motors and use 2 part epoxy to glue them back together, but that's honestly the easiest part of this job.

Good stuff!

Eventually I'll take one apart and see if its the long shaft or not. I'll order some up and do a properly documented write up. Right after I do that one thing, and that other thing...

I'd say I'll probably beat you to it, but my 4runner gets parked during the summer until it starts to rain again. I spend most of my time on 2 wheels when it's dry outside.
