Door Lock Ghost...with a twist

This probably isn't the culprit for most people here, but the doors will unlock automatically if you shut the driver door and the key is still in the ignition. Some people will put the key in the ignition before they close the door, so this system will go off.

I thought something was wrong with my 4runner, but it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize it was simply a system to stop me from locking the keys in the car. How thoughtful.

Then there's the idjits the put their keys in the cup holders when they're on the way out. Just for a second, to keep track of them, you know. If Toyota could come up with a way to keep the doors from locking if some idiot does that, I'd be really grateful...

It'd have cost my insurance company a lot less on one ocaision, as well. Ahem...

[Poor runner]

had essentially the exact same thing happening to mine ('02 3.4 4wd 225k miles) when I lived back east. Happened on a drive from DC to NJ during a really bad rain storm. Locks wouldn't stop freaking out the entire drive back. Happened again intermittently with heavy rain, but I moved across the country to the desert and it hasn't been an issue since. Maybe just move to the desert? lol

I already live in a desert but you did get me thinking about wet contacts so I pulled the driver's door switch panel to see if that helped. The doors continued to lock on their own with it unplugged so that wasn't it.

I also read about the wiring in the rear hatch cracking and causing shorts so I dug into that. There was a bunch of cracked wires but again, the ghost locking happened with the whole rear door wiring harness unplugged.

At this point I think it has to be the control panel. I swear I can hear the relay in the panel click a second before the doors lock. Or maybe this is driving me insane...

Does anyone know which fuse is for the door locks? At this point I just want it to stop before it burns out the lock actuators.
