Door lock problem

I have a 1999 4Runner SR5 manual trans. When I bought it I noticed the the power locks only work with the key in the ignition and in the "On" position. Moreover if the drivers door is open when I hit the power lock button it will automatically unlock all the doors. also when I unlock the door with the key the second turn will not unlock the other doors. If I lock the door with the key it only lock that door, unless the ignition key is in and in the "On" position. It is the same with the rear power window, only operates from that lock if the key is in the ignition.

I have read some posts about the fuse block under the driver knee panel. I have had similar items apart in my times, can anyone explain how a power distribution bar goes bad, or is it a matter of oxidation and or expansion? If someone has pictures of a failed fuse block I would love to see them.

I am used to the Toyota floating ground so if anyone can tell me where to look I would greatly appreciate it.:thanks::thanks::thanks:

So the factory door locks are just not wired for that type of failure. There are multiple power sources for the Body ECU(the fuse block under the driver's knee panel), but it's unlikely the situation could occur without affecting several other systems. That said, it could be your body ECU is totally fubar.

I'm inclined to believe someone put their hands on your truck and mucked it up. Do you have an aftermarket alarm system?

Here is the EWD for the 2002, yours should be similar or the same.

I don't believe this 'feature' is a malfunction, mine does the same and yet all other features work as they should.

I know its not pertitent but thought I'd mention: I especially like the ability to lock the vehicle with the engine running from the outside (useful on occassion).

I agree with IBallEngineer, the electrical is non-standard for some reason, just wanted to let you know the feature above is normal but agreed a pita! Luck and enjoy. :cowboy:

No that is NOT normal. Unless the key is in the ignition. With the key in the ignition and front door open you can not lock the vehicle. That is to prevent you from locking it with the keys in the ignition and locking your self out. But with the key out of the ignition, you should be able to lock all doors. OP did not clarify, but if he meant with the key in, then yes it IS normal.

yup, I read it as key in. keyout is logical to allow locking. bummer of a problem, hope ya' figure it out OP. :cowboy:

I am actually running down the Key issue. When I bought a code key the parts guy said it should have a transponder. there is not one and the truck operates fine with out it. I have that feeling someone has mucked up that system. I'm going to a dealer to get the dealer daily print out of the exact options it came with.

With no key in the ignition the power door locks do not operate from the panel switch or the key on the outside of the vehicle.

I was under the knee panel today and found no transponder and no other alarm. No damage to the factory harness of any kind, Thank God.:banana::banana:

I pulled the drivers door switch ans the same very clean for the year and no MODS. WOOT! WOOT!
I have completely rebuilt the tailgate and nothing wrong there.

If you have anyy suggestions I appreciate it. I will go over you diagram tonight.

If you've gone over the diagram you've found IE & IF common grounds for this system. Take em off and clean & inspect wiring. Also pull apart connector IG1 and clean with electronic cleaner, could be intermittent power problem. The old thread you were already on, seems to have found the door lock problem these 4R's have. Replace the fuse box or you might spray it with cleaner, seems to have worked for some but not all. Good luck with it...!

I pulled out the fuse box and removed the cover on the body control mod. I cleaned all the connection, however they were not corroded. No change in the operation. I went be the dealer and pulled the dealer daily so I could get the correct Fuse block. Thanks for the help.
