Door lock replacement 96 runner

First, thanks for the great info on how to get to the lock!

It says the problem was a broken yellow tab. Why then the new key and locksmith? Why not just a new yellow tab? I don't know what I am not understanding about this.....

Most people have a problem with the yellow plastic clip breaking and then their door handle won't open the door. My problem was that the lock wore out and would not unlock with the key, which is why I had to have it fixed by a locksmith.

I guess ill chime in as I was able to hit buy now on a new driver side lock cylinder and Key. My drivers side lock on my 97 limited is getting really sticky and I am unable to get it to lock from the outside anymore. (I have to use the button on the inside to lock the doors.

Is it likely that a lock smith would be able to address the current lock cylinder or should I just pick up a new cylinder with key and replace it?

New cylinder is only $63.11 from Toyotapartsdeal.com

Up to you. You will have two keys if you get a new cylinder. Locksmith may be able to fix it for $30 or so..?

Only an 11 year old thread, but my passenger lock cylinder is broken and I am trying to replace it.

I opened the door panel ok, got the 2 10mm bolts out of the handle, and disconnected the lock cylinder rod, but how the hell does the larger rod come off? I removed the clear plastic clip, but the rod still won't budge. I don't want to use force and break it.

Also, since I have power locks, how does the electrical disconnect from the actual cylinder? There does not look like a plug that can be disconnected, and the wires travel all the way to the bottom of the door.

Just in case anyone reads this later, I ended up finding a great video on exactly how to take out the lock cylinder. I can't find it now to link it, but I believe it was by Timmy's Toyota on YouTube.
