Door trigger

So I bumped a older thread and never got a reply. But the girls 02 4runner is having door trigger issues.

Back story,
Bought the truck and everything worked great besides interior light output. Installed LED bulbs in all map lights and dome lights. About 2 weeks after something happened and it popped the fuse. Replaced the fuse and all rear doors( rear passenger doors/cargo door) no longer triggered the dome light and the dash door ajar never lights up. Installed the hologen lights back and same symptoms. Only the 2 front doors trigger the dome.

Found a diagram and it looks like the 2 rear doors along with the hatch are on there own system from the front doors. I'm wondering if there is a relay or fuse I'm not finding that works these or did I somehow fry the cluster for those circuits.

If I did fry the circuit (not going to replace the cluster for that issue) wonder if piggy backing the rear doors to the front would be a issue. Don't really care about the hatch as I can turn it on manually but the girl 5'2 can't reach the front dome when getting our 2yr old into the car seat in the dark.

You are correct, the instrument cluster has a logic circuit which controls the door courtesy switch inputs and the ground circuits of the dome lamps. The front doors are different in that they also ground inputs to the Body ECU, that relates to door lock function, like not locking the doors with the key in the ignition.

You could theoretically tie the front and rear doors together, or you could go old school and have the rear door switches found the lights directly if you use some diodes to protect the Cluster circuits, just in case. All kinds of possibilities!

I thought about tying the door triggers directly to the light but feel like splicing into the front door trigger and running a wire down and back to the rear trigger would be easier then tearing everything apart. I'm just worried if I do this that I might short something else.

Not sure if this is related at all, but my issue was the door switches themselves. I moved the passenger side front to the passenger side back and the rear door now triggers the dome light and the passenger front doesn't. Its a very simple switch, but i haven't been able to pull it apart yet to find out why its not working. Most likely just 20years of wear and tear.

I have spare switches I was going to use but I highly doubt that's the issue unless there's a fuseable link in the switch. Otherwise not sure why the rear doors and hatch would fry when the fuse popped.

No it won't short anything if you do it correctly. The system doesn't know what is causing the circuit to ground, only if it's grounded or not. And when one of the left side doors is open then the other won't do anything because the circuit is already grounded.

Have you tried cleaning the door switches? When I bought my 97 the drivers door wouldn't cause the light to illuminate. I took the switch apart and gave a light scruff to the contact points and the switch has worked since. Doing that was good practice for when my headlight combo switch did the same thing. Took the combo switch out and cleaned/a ruffed up the contacts and I haven't had any problems.
