Double Decker question

Double Decker

I have a question about the double-decker system. I know there is a weight limit for when it is in the "up" position being used as a shelf.

But is there a weight limit when it is in the "down" position? If so, is it a lower limit than a 4Runner without it?

I dont know the answer to your question, but I have put several hundred pounds of flagstone rock on mine without issue. In fact, I had so much weight in my limited, that it would not drive well above about 45mph, so I seriously overloaded the car

no issue on the deck in the low position, it still works fine

(now i have a nice looking back yard and a happy wife )

I haven't seen a limit for the down position. The limit in the up position is probably related to the fact that it's a shelf supported on the plastic wheel well covers. When it's down, it has the support of the floorboard.
 
What is annoying about the double decker rear

The fact that anything you put on top deck in the up position, will slide off the upper deck to the rear of the car, with anything above gentle acceleration

I have tried to use it numerous times and unless the rear of the car is fully loaded anything I put on there, just slides off

Do you have the air suspension? If so, how did it do with regards to ride height?

My DD cargo shelf came with a cargo net that completely covers the shelf. It works great for securing stuff put on the top.

I just went and found my invoice from the garden supplies company and they sell flagstone by type/color and weight.

I dont have the Xreas shocks on this one. and darn it, I just discovered on the window sticker, I paid for the Cargo net, but the dealer (stealer) never did give me one, and my 4runner almost 2 years old so I have no chance of getting one from them now.

I'd call them up and ask anyway. If they value you as a customer, I'm sure they'll just give you one. Try it....you have nothing to lose.

yeah for reals, I just purchased a 4runner myself and mine had the same problem. It was also missing the change holder. They checked everywhere on the truck and then said pull one out of another one. After about 3 4runners they gave up and ordered me a new net. They did not want to give me a coin holder though. At least I got the net though! It's amazing however, how many of them didnt have it...sad :-(

[I would ask them anyways seeing as its a common problem. The worst they'll say is no, but maybe you can get their famous 20% discount hehe.:biggrin2:

I went to Harbor Freight Tools and got a couple of pieces of toolbox rubber mat. It works like a charm and prevents the carpet from staining if I'm taking drain oil to be recycled, carrying a gas can etc. Nothing moves even if I'm driving aggressively.
 
I'm in pre-purchase mode and most of the Sport 4R's come with the double decker as an option. Is it removable w/o much effort? Does removing it leave any unfinished look? If you can remove it I might do that and just put in a cargo liner of some kind.

that the plastic boxes from home depot/ace etc fit really snug under it, you can easily get two of them under there to hold all sorts of stuff. and if you lay it flat and put a rear deck liner on it, its pretty groovey too.

if the deck is up up and the rear seats are up, there is an excellent hidy-hole to conseal somthing like a....what ever you might want to keep out of sight

also to answer your question, I usually lay my rear deck flat and I dont even know its there most of the time. Its a very clever option for camping and the like

It can be removed and if it is there's a gap where the shelf hinges on and I think about an inch difference. I see no reason to remove the shelf, unless you need that one extra inch or so of height from the ceiling. I always leave mine down.
 
I always keep mine in the down position , but all I can tell you is that I had about a 200 lb hydro pc. of steel on mine and it was fine. I did have to put a carpet down fist so that added a little padding underneath ( because of hydro fluid.)

Dont know if that helps you but best I can come up with from experience.
 
If you have an option of not getting one, I'd avoid it. I think I used it once when I first got the truck and since then it's been in the down position.
 
I bought mine off the lot , really no use for it and would not buy/order it specifically , but thats the way she sat.
 
DD in down position has no restrictions, other than overall load limits...I loaded > 1000lb of shingles in the back (rear seats folded) and then drove for 4 hours. It was absolutely fine.

The 2008 SE mostly come with a "value package" which includes the DD. I like some of the other options in the value package, but it would cost thousands more to not get the DD, then add the other options.
I really don't want the DD, but I might not have a choice. I don't want to pay extra $$ to NOT have the DD.

Thanks a lot Toyota for trying to make the 4Runner a better value :)
