So much hate in this thread, “stating the obvious”....yeah to us it’s obvious, to non-T4R owners it isn’t. And let’s be honest, he covered FAR more info than a Toyota salesman who typically knows shitall about the TRD Pro. The first time I inquired about the Pro at the dealer was told there were only cosmetic differences, which simply just isn’t true. Then I asked about the 2019 Pro model and asked what’s different, they said absolutely no difference. Also not true.

The "cool factor" of the truck wore off quickly for the dude. I can see that. If you don't know what youre getting into, the 4runner can get boring and buyers remorse sets in. I agree that the cluster and headunit could have used some updating. I mean there isnt even auto headlights in base models. A corolla gets that feature. Little things like that add up when you spend 50k on a vehicle.
For the record Demuro used to work for Porsche and knows his stuff. He's always been witty and unnecessarily critical for every vehicle he's driven and owned. He's written a couple books, which I enjoyed reading, but his comedy just wore off for me. I used to watch his videos, now I only watch if its an interesting car he's "reviewing."

Long time Doug fan here...
I've gotten swept into the YouTube car review rabbit hole the last year or two and have managed to watch most of Doug's vids. He has a huge following, both in terms of fans and detractors. And he is a bit of a disruptor as an automotive journalist from... Autotrader. He's paid to write about cars for a used car classified ads website and help generate web traffic with his content, not pander to car companies pushing their latest and greatest offerings.
Doug doesn't wrench on cars and doesn't have any niche automotive hobbies catering to any one crowd (drag racing, track/clubs, offroad, classic car restoration, etc.). Closest he gets is 'cars and coffee'. He was formerly a manager at Porsche North America and he seems to have some degree of knowledge in product development or user experience (or product life-cycles).
Most of his reviews are from the perspective of an average everyday buyer evaluating a product's pros and cons. Cars he reviews aren't limited to new(ish) cars and spans decades of automotive history, also every range of price points. His target audience is probably car-enthusiast middle-aged men who have dreamed about owning fun cars from every era but ultimately drive around something boring and more practical on an everyday basis. Doug reintroduces his audience to cars of the past, cars that are a few years old and now affordable, and halo cars/brands many of us could only dream of owning. Then, evaluates 'features and quirks' on a level playing field. So, door controls on a Ferrari F40 are compared to a Phantom. He's trying to answer the question, "What would it be like to drive and own this car?"
Doug's 4Runner review was absolutely not targeted to the 5th gen T4R crowd and wouldn't offer this group anything new or interesting - although as a 3rd gen owner I was sort of amazed at how feature-deficient the 5th gen was. Doug isn't going to provide any insight into what the next gen 4Runner will look like or delve into specialized tests comparing one vehicle to the next - other than zero-60. That's not his thing. But Doug does accurately point out what the 5th gen is missing or lacking compared to vehicles at a similar price point and production era. He's probably one of the best journalists out there able to evaluate vehicles without fan boy bias and has enough experience reviewing vehicles across the spectrum to provide legitimate insight. Even if he does wear two t-shirts and is weird, awkward and dorky.

Doug's TRD Pro review
I haven't seen Doug's videos before but I was underwhelmed by his review of the TRD Pro. He missed the point of all those off-road features that you can't find on most other SUVs. I was glad to see him state what is not so obvious to people here who complain about the outdated design. It's a simple truck and that makes it reliable and less prone to failure that requires expensive repairs. I appreciate that about this vehicle, having owned a Jeep GC.
He made mention of the fact that he borrowed the car from a friend for the review and that the friend returned it for a VW Golf shortly after the video was made.
Compare the TRD Pro review to his review of the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler where he thrills over the latest gimmicks and features, like an optional power sliding canvas top and folding down the front windshield (who would ever use that?). Clearly he liked the Jeep better.
He gave a disclosure. Jeep paid for his trip to Arizona to review it during a roll-out event.

Doug's personality and reviews are an acquired taste, but I personally love all the details of every car that he explores. I love when he describes the buttons, switches, and materials.
Why are so many people hung up on what he looks like? He's not modeling he's a car blogger. It's like Mean Girls 3 in here...

That's why I watch him. He goes into detail about things that most people reviewing the car will just go over vaguely.

Sad part is. It IS old news. It should have been updated years ago. Not necessarily the engine and the transmission, which are extremely outdated. But the interior.
Ford F-150 just voted most reliable pickup for 2014. That is more reliable than the Tundra.

And Ford did this all while upgrading to the latest and greatest technologies.
Vehicles nowadays are all fairly reliable. Toyota just doesn’t make money researching and developing as well as retooling. But they do make money selling the same regurgitated stuff year over year. And they then say it’s all in the name of reliability. Hmmmm.
I like my 4Runner (wife’s) but I’m also taken aback at the price and outdated “everything” that comes with it.
And yes I do drive an F-150. It was either the F-150 or a Tundra (which I really liked) but the F-150 won me over. Maybe a Tundra next time...

I agree. I’ve enjoyed watching his reviews on new and old exotics and see just how much of an afterthought some features of these hyper expensive vehicles are where you would expect the details to be buttoned down. Doug’s a goofball but he’s got a great formula. His review of the 4R seemed rushed, but of course I’m gonna hold greater judgement as I know the car better than he does.
Another guy I like is the Savage Geese guy and his mecahnic where they look at the car from the underside, but don’t feel like I see his mechanic on the show anymore.
