I agree with Doug', It's a great old school body on frame SUV that is really capable off road right out of the box. It drives like a pig on pavement, has horrible gas mileage and the interior is from the early 2000s. So, for the 95% of the people who own this vehicle who never take it on anything more than a dirt forest service road there are so many better options out there.

Ford F-150 just voted most reliable pickup for 2014. That is more reliable than the Tundra.

The 09-14 F-150 is not in the same league as the Tundra reliability wise, and the current gen F-150 isn’t even as reliable as the previous. JD Power is simply fake news. True Delta shows the same drop in quality. Head over to the F-150 forum, and you’ll see that they are plagued with oil pan leaks, water leaks into the cab, misaligned body panels, failing sunroofs, and transmission issues on the 10-speed, etc.

As hard as it is to admit, I test drove an ‘18 F-150 just last week (this was the second time) because the incentives are so good right now, and I was thinking about getting back into a truck. Long story short, I left the dealership with a renewed sense of happiness in my 4Runner. It’s brutally obvious that it’s a better built vehicle. I’ve decided that I’m staying put, despite some of the T4R’s shortcomings.

FWIW, my last vehicle was a ‘13 F-150 w/ 3.5EB, and it was an OK truck but gave me far more trouble than it should have for the 60K miles I owned it.

Pretty much. The F-150 has great power, efficiency, room, and amenities. That being said, you're just taking a gamble when you buy one. I'm the type of guy where vehicle issues ruin the whole experience for me, so I made the decision to stick with the 4Runner.

Are you talking about the Ecoboost F150s? I thought the 5.0 v8 F150s and the 6.2 Raptors are problem free compared to the new turbo stuff.

Not just the EcoBoosts, since the 5.0 isn't without it's problems now. I have limited experience with the last gen 6.2, but I think it was solid. Here's one recent thread about an '18 5.0, but there are many more: Need a New Engine

Really, all in all, I think most of the engines are pretty good (although there does seem to be a plague of oil pan leaks, which the dealer's fail to fix properly, which causes another leak). Newer problems are mostly related to things like the IWEs (this actually got my '13, and still isn't fixed on the new ones), sunroofs breaking, rattles, "sinking dash", freezing door locks, brake issues, transmission problems, etc.

Granted, you've got to take into account the sheer number of F-150's sold, but just take one look around that forum and note the percentage of threads related to issues vs. regular threads. It's a night and day difference between here and there.

Thanks for responding, I would like to get a used v8 Raptor one day. The new redesigned Raptor is awesome but the v6 sounds terrible. (not to mention they all cost like $80k )

I have to say that in the video, when Doug calls the 4runner basically a new FJ60, makes me wonder if the next gen will drop the 4Runner name.

Are you Trump? Explain how jdpower is fake news. They gave the tundra better overall power train reliability but gave the f150 better overall reliability. Consumer reports gives the overall score to the f150 but reliability to the Tundra.

The 4Runner forum is an enthusiast forum but still has threads about problems.

The f150 sells 700k trucks a year and your going to get people complaining about them. Often times people post just the problems. I’ve owned 2 f150s. The 2003 never had a single issue other than regular maintenance sold it at 330k kms. The V8 was solid so was the tranny. My new f150 is the 5.0 and it’s so far solid. I’ve owned 2 other ford 5.0 V8s and never had a single issue on either one and drove them all over 300k kms.

I don’t doubt that Toyota makes a reliable vehicle. I think that they could still make a reliable vehicle while updating the powertrain and the creature comforts without hurting sales. That’s all I’m saying.

130K miles on a 2014 4R and so far just tires, brake rotors, pads, shocks, oil changes and lube and a set of spark plugs. Pretty much regular maintenance. It's pretty similar to my 2005 Honda Accord. In contrast, I hated the 2007 SLK 280 I just sold and that was a good car compared to the prior SLK 230, both of which were my wife's cars and now she has the 4Runner. I do not understand the downgrade for all the interior bells and whistle as that is the stuff that breaks. Who wants that stuff in a truck that's designed for off-roading? If you want to be a faux 4wd city slicker, then buy a Porsche Cayenne, Land Rover, or a BMW M5, put on your derby and white gloves and act cool.

Agreed, those weird scallops are dumb, and the effort some bumper manufacturers make to retain those design cues...weird.

The "cool factor" of the truck wore off quickly for the dude. I can see that. If you don't know what youre getting into, the 4runner can get boring and buyers remorse sets in. I agree that the cluster and headunit could have used some updating. I mean there isnt even auto headlights in base models. A corolla gets that feature. Little things like that add up when you spend 50k on a vehicle.

I have a 2014 base model silverado. I'm talking rubber floors, crank windows, side mirrors that you adjust by sticking your hand out the window and pushing them. Yet it has auto headlights. Little things like that really tick me off about Toyota.
