Download XP virtual machine for Techstream

So one of my projects is to get that Techstream or whatever its called working.

I bought the USB-OBDII from some guy on eBay (check).

I downloaded VMWare Workstation, sort of familiar with it.

I also downloaded VirtualBox from Oracle.

Some where on the internet someone pointed out that Microsoft provides VMs for testing old versions of IE under XP. I found it and I downloaded it. BUT .... during the download, my DSL modem crapped out (it was 10 years old), so I bought a new modem and got it working again, went back to the laptop and restarted the download. Will ... its corrupt some how. No problem, just download it again. But now I can't find the page that has IE8 and XP on Microsoft's site. This is the best I can find...

So either
- I got my head up my ass and don't know how to use a search engine.
- Microsoft removed the XP VMs
- I will have to torrent somebody's XP VM (shudder)
- Try running XP mode in a VM of Windows 7 of the laptop running W10 (shudder)
- Put another partition on the laptop, install W7, and install XP Mode. (time consuming, but might get it to work).

And some random comment about how VMWare free version seems like it sucks, I can't find how to load up a file, can't find how to create a snapshot.

Do NOT SPEND ALOT OF TIME ON SOLVING MY PROBLEM.
But, if you happen to know, oh yeah, its right here, dumbass, please do post.

Brother, I've got a bunch of Dell XP install disks - think they will only work on a Dell machine, if that's what you have by chance - you're welcome to one.
Also have a couple machines that run XP that I'll freecycle to you if you'll pay to ship.

XP is end of life, and no longer supported except under extended contract. They probably removed them. Why do you have to have an unsupported OS?

You can get it to work on Windows 10 you don't have to have XP. I know because I have it running that way on my laptop.

There is a long history and several threads about Techstream. A search here will get you more info than you want! Basically people have used an old laptop running XP. Then they get a bootleg disc and OBD11 cable from Ebay or somewhere. Some have had success and others not. May even depend on what year your 4Runner is.

There are copies of XP home or pro out there. It's not supported any more by microsoft; so I'd get the latest copy I could find that has the latest service packs included.

I have it up and running on a Windows 10 laptop. No need to go through all the VM hassle.

Thanks Blitzkreig, I will check that out when I get home.

I still want to play around with VMs, I could see how they would make testing new software easier.

And yes, I got a cheap China made cable and a bootleg Techstream with a virus on it.

The Windows XP VM was on Microsoft website like Saturday afternoon, and now its gone, or I think its gone.

A co-worker has an FJ, I was explaining it to him, so we hit eBay, and what do you know, somebody sells a supposed 64-bit version. This might be total BS. I would have to dig around in my eBay history to find the one I bought.

--I never had luck running TS within an XP VM on Win7-64. It would occasionally try to connect, but only for a couple of seconds. Tried on a couple of different laptops. Not worth the effort to set up and debug the VM.
--Many sellers claim that their device will work with 64-bit W7. The one I bought claimed to be the latest version and that it would. It did not. But that was a while ago.

It's true (edit: actually you can download it for free, you don't have to buy it). I have it and it works. It's in that link above, later version in link below. Windows 10/64Bit.

This is the guy I bought it from and who provided the link. He is (of all places) from Bulgaria but was great to work with and very responsive when I had issues. --> Sold by alekslale ( 64 )

It is just a false alarm, it changes system hardware ID and that is why it appears as a virus, if you are still worried, you can use our newer version which we just released yesterday :

I've been fighting this for a while on my Win 8/64 machine. I also have the ebay cd and cable but have never been able to get it to work. I guess I'll try the Win10 link above and hope dor the best.

Just wondering if there is other software folks use to monitor systems. Some folks use ScanGuage to monitor trans temp, instant MPG, etc. Having this cable opens up the possibility to monitor just about anything while driving. Maybe Techstream does all this but I haven't figured it out yet.

A bluetooth ODB2 reader and the Torque Android app is IMHO the best way to go for monitoring/trending. Its also $160 cheaper than a ScanGauge.

Well, if you want to real-time monitor TechStream will do that if you want your laptop sitting in the passenger seat. I look at it more as as monitor and fix tool.

I think maybe something like what Stamonkey is talking about is what you are looking for. I am sure there are gauge packages out there that will show your real time readings like trans temp, etc... but me personally - I don't care as long as there is not an issue.

As far as MPG, IMO the factory display does a pretty good job of that. I know my 2015 TE averages about 17.1 currently and thats about all I need to know. I mean you can watch the MPG meter as you get on it and let off so not sure what more you want - digital display of same I assume?

The virus scanner at work, VIPRE Business, just flagged one of the files from that Bulgarian website as having a Trojan.

I agree, I bought Torque a few years ago to be able to read and reset codes along with the extra gauges for my GMC it was the cheapest way to see the balance rates on the injectors. It's moved from car to car without any hiccups or extra expenses since then.
