TIS-Techstream is the Toyota factory diagnostic tool (Technical Information System)

This is a very useful tool to have if you are a DIY type owner. Tons of useful features and visibility to trouble codes that are not available in generic OBD2 standard scanners. You can also customize options and run various diagnostics and reset procedures.. Like tire pressure sensors...

I had this installed in the past when it would only run on XP and just went through the process again recently.

Thought I would document what I did real quick to help others out as things have changed over time and it has become much easier.

You can get this for about $20-$30. It's obviously not legal (especially for commercial use).. but the hacked versions are out there and available...

You can now install Toyota TIS on a 64bit OS like Windows10... but I found it much simpler to just install a 32 bit VM like windows 8.1 and go from there. I just don't trust the software enough to run it directly on the host OS...

The issue I kept running into on 64 bit is that most antivirus software will see the drivers as suspect and give you fits on 64bit. So if you are going to run a VM anyway.. why not just run 32bit and keep it simple.

Also. You will need a Type 2 hyper-visor (like VirtualBox or VMWare workstation player). MS hyper-V will not work as it is Type1 and does not allow access to USB devices directly.

So here is what I did.

Step 0. Buy a mini vci cable somewhere like Amazon. They are cheap and come with the drivers and a version of TIS.

1. Intstall VM Ware workstation player
https://www.vmware.com/products/player/playerpro-evaluation.html I did this on windows.. but you should be able to do this on OSx also (I have not tried)

2. Get a simple 32 bit x86 windows OS VM image here

I grabbed 8.1 just to keep it simple. These have a 90 day limit. But should last you a long time if you keep it paused...plus you can just snapshot and rollback...

3. Import the VM file into the player

4. Install the MVCI Driver for Toyota.msi
if you don't have this on the disk that came with the cable PM me and I can send you one.

5. Download the latest TIS here

6. Uncompressed it with the password listed:mhhauto.com. I think it is a rar file so you may need to grab winRar,7zip or something similar. Put the files into a directory of your choice. VMWare player supports something called unity mode on windows.. This allows you to simply drag and drop files between the host and guess OS as it presents each running app as a simple window.. so you can uncompress all the files are your host OS... and just drag them over.

7.Run the GTS_...exe in the directory created in step 6 on the guest VM

8. Copy the MainMenue.exe file (created in step 6) manually to C:\Program Files\Toyota Diagnostics\Techstream\bin overwriting the existing file (keep key.txt handy for step 12)

9. Install JavaRuntime here https://java.com/en/download/ on the guest OS

10. Plug in your MVCI cable. VMware will prompt you to enable it in the VM (it typically shows devices in the top right corner)

11. Your VM desktop should have a MVCI firmware update tool shortcut. Run that and click the INFO button to make sure you can communicate with the USB cable...

12. Start up Techstream. Go to Setup->Register Techstream Enter reg key from key.txt in step 8

The free version of VM ware player does not allow snapshots.. So a good idea is to make a full copy in Documents\Virtual Machines\[name] so you can rollback... (not sure where this is on a mac)

Hope this helps someone... I take no responsibilities for viruses.. that could exist in these files, but the VM isolation should keep you pretty safe from contamination.

I purchased my Ver. 13 for Techstream last week off Ebay and purchased the Cable from Amazon...ran all the software through my Norton AV and the 2 files for the cable were quarantined. I'm running 64 bit on my Windows laptop and I had the seller of the Techstream software install it through Team Viewer. Do you think the software was OK ??...They were DLL files which I believe can contain Malware...Hope I didn't "F" up my laptop but the Techstream is running fine !!

I have no idea.. But the files have some type of virus signature in them. That is why I will only run it in a dedicated VM and would not recommend doing it any other way. Is it a real threat... I have no idea... but my laptop is how I do all my work...so I can't take the risk.

You are one trusting individual. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I hope you where at the very least sandboxed in a virtual machine for that session or on a junk laptop you bought specifically for this purpose. :wow::doh:

I installed Techstream on an old XP laptop. After doing Step 12, it takes me to the TIS login page. Techstream won't finish the registration until I login, but I don't have a TIS subscription... so I seem to be stuck in a loop. Is there some way past the TIS login?

You should definitely remove any Network connections for the Virtual Machine in whichever VM software you use. While I use VMware products at work, I prefer Virtualbox on a laptop.

I downloaded MicroXP and booted the ISO in the virtual machine because the ISO is 100MB and the installed machine is 200MB. I'm not going to explain that part, there's plenty of guides online. I wanted to focus on how to Safely run a virtual machine to isolate and protect from potential malware running inside the VM.

First you want to disable Shared Clipboard and Drag n' Drop in the Virtual Machine Settings. This is off by default in Virtualbox, so you shouldn't need to change anything.

Second, you want to disable all networking. The software inside the VM should not need an Internet connection. You don't want some C&C infection on your Router, Printer or various IoT devices in the house. If you really need to connect it to the Internet, connect your laptop to a Smartphone Wifi Hotspot and BRIDGE the VM network adapter to your Wifi. Be sure to turn OFF the Bridge for the VM before you connect to your home Wifi again! This setting is On by default, turn it off!

I used a Shared folder to drop all the needed software into the VM. This is relatively safe if you're sensible about it. Make it readonly, and never, ever run those programs on your host computer, or copy them anywhere else. Leave them in the shared folder or delete them permanently with Shift+Delete. If there is some kind of malware running with all this fun pirated software, it could potentially find a way to modify files in the Shared folder. We can't be 100% sure that read-only is truly read-only. Once it goes in the shared folder, don't ever take it out!

You'll also need to give the VM access to your USB dongle for communicating with the Vehicle. Plug in your OBD adapter cable and enable it in USB settings. If you have issues with communication, it may help to install Virtualbox Guest Additions inside the VM and enable USB 2.0 here as well. Try USB 1.1 first and see how it goes. For my Tactrix 2.0 cable, I installed the official driver-only package for use without ECUflash, then used the Add Hardware control panel in MicroXP to install the device TWICE as it contains two or more physical interfaces in the cable. I pointed the wizard at C:\Program Files\ OpenECU\OpenPort 2.0\drivers both times and everything seemed to work correctly for me.

I programmed all windows down for key fob and disabled Seat Belt chimes. I've no need for TIS Techstream after that. I don't trust hacked versions enough to do zero point calibrations or any OEM setting alterations. Gave my cable away. I use OBD2 scanner for diagnostics and repairs.

All up with pressing key fob button? There is no option for that. All windows down with double click on door open button is useful in summer so you don't get in scorching hot interior.

thanks for the info. i've been able to program them down with the key fob but not up.

but on my lexus and bmw i can do up and down via key fob.
