Downshifting Problems

Hey there fellow 4Runner pilots! I was cruising around in the higher elevations yesterday and got into a bit of a sticky situation. Long story short I was faced with a long, winding, and snowy decent. My nerves kicked in and I dropped her down in 4wheel low and low gear and began my slow creep to the less frozen lands below. Everything felt fine and I reached the paved and dry portion of the journey successfully. I popped her back up into her native 4 wheel high and proceeded. Upon intiating my usually downshifting hill decent protocol I found she wouldn't downshift from drive at all! No difference between any of the lower gears and no sound of the lower gears engaging. My brakes are very warm and I am very sad. Any idea what might be going on? Thanks a bunch!

If it still drives normally, it must still be able to shift and it's just not getting the signal to downshift.

What happens if you put it in L and try to accelerate from a stop up to 30ish mph? Does it act like it's in L or D?
