Downshifting!!!

On my way home today when the freeway was backed up and I'm going around 25-30, I thought I would try and finally try using the manual shifter. And because I read in the manual that you can shift whenver you want - the transmission only shifts when safe - I went all the way down to L - thought I would experience this in an automatic for once.

It shifted some gears and the car almost came down to 10-15mph (without loud engine noise and jerks) when I shifted up again to D and accelerated out of there.

This should not have caused any transmission damage right???

another thing: do these "intelligent" transmissions allow you to downshift while still giving the vehicle gas?

Your transmission is fine, no damage done from a few harsh downshifts. If you did this every day it might be different story.

About using the throttle during downshifting - you can, but it really only works when you're accelerating or want more power.

Reving the engine to match RPMs with the transmission (like you would with a manual) for engine braking downshifts does not work. As far as I am aware the transmission isn't designed to do that. There's no smooth, gracefull way to downshift the 4Runner for decelleration. I'm not sure if that was your question but that's my experience...

oh chit! you should not have gone all the way down to L! when you down shift an auto go D4, then 3, 2 L not from D5 to L . you pronely bent a couple of value and rod and maybe blow a piston which shot a hole in your engine. better check if oil is gushing out under the 4R!! remember next X when you do that think about diving! if you go down to deep and go up to fast you will have big problem! Take it slow !one step @ a X. :bonk: :nono:

brakes are cheaper to replace than tranny

Your tranny is fine it was not that dramatic of a downshift, just don't make it a habit.

You throw rods when you are going like 60 and down shift to first.

Your tranny should be fine, although you probably shook loose some of the connectors in the headliner...

These "smart" transmissions will not let you shift into Reverse while the vehicle is moving forward, even if you push the shifter into R, it will not engage. Downshifting is a different story... You can downshift all you want, but downshifting too much (i.e. from 5 to L) can cause excessive wear and potentially blow the tranny (if done repeatedly).

Now, if this was an Exploder, you would have been picking up the pieces on the highway last night...
