Downsid of 4wheeling?

Ive always been really paranoid about going serious off roading in my truck. I feel like if I go mudding alot, the car will start to make more noises and not ride as smooth. What do you guys think about this bullsh*t theory? Any personal experiences on cons(or maybe pros?) of going off road for the truck?

take 1,500 bucks or less and buy an old 4x4 and take it out and trash it... If it croaks on the trail, just leave it... That should get some of those off roading itches taken care of. Plus you will not have to worry about trashing that beautiful machine in the driveway!

Going by your sig line, you'd be better off staying on hardtop or light dirt roads. Sorry dude, but you've gotta pay to play (ie, expect a down side).
Infrared night vision, K+N, and Sirius won't do shit for you off road.

I really dont have any mods to help me off road except bigger tires 70's . I go everywhere with this thing. It been caked with mud , has battle brush scratches on the sides , still cleans up nice , looks sharp , solid as the day I picked it up. 23K miles at the moment and run pretty hard.

Just my .02....

I would like a small lift ( 1" front end level would be fine ) and get rid of the damn Revos and get some real AT tires .

I've got about 20+ off road trips in my Runner over the last two years (including a little mudding) and mechanically my truck has been fine but you will have to deal with the occassional scuffs and branch rubs down the side which I have a few of;fortunatly nearly all my scrapes have been able to be buffed out but a few still show.

Im asking cause I got stuck in a mud pit for lack of better description last weekend. I also have the completely bald stock dunlops still on the truck. I ordered some Yokohama 265x70 17s yesterday. Its funny you mentions scuffs, cause I got some bad ones from that trip. I have a HUGE gash down the passenger side of the truck from a 3in diameter tree that scraped along. Im not sure how to get it out, but its not down to primer luckily

Fortunatly I've only got scuffs but I'm very careful with my truck off road and I know my skill level and most of the trail obstacles have a bypass for us wimps.

Seen too many people wheel their stuff, bang it up, and be pissed, when they shouldn't have been there to begin with.

Even the bunny trails can take their toll. If you don't want scratchs, dents, and worse damage, stay at the mall.

Im gonna bite my tongue with some of the comments made!! All I can do is laugh at them!!! As for your question Subzero, if you have a 4x4 and a V8 with some decent A/T Tires, there shouldn't be to much of a problem going though mostly anything!! But if you go and do a lot of crazy offroading do expect to get scuffs and what not! I have first hand experience with this having had A 1977 4x4 Chevy Blazer with 36" Super Swampers and 8" of lift. As well as a 1984 Jeep CJ-7 with 6" of lift and 35" Super Swampers. Even on both of these beasts I have gotten scuffs. I know that at first it can make you nervous but sometimes you gotta take a little risk to have fun! As you can see I have a V6 4x2 with stock Dunlops and I have gone though stuff and gotten stuck, and I have gone though stuff that even some 4x4 were nervous to go through and made it out with no scuffs or mechanical problems so just go for it!!!!

great advice man... i mean, lets just leave broken down vehicles in our last remaining wilderness to pollute our world just that much more... worry more about our wilderness staying beautiful instead of a machine that can be buffed out. come on man, be responsible atleast.

if you dont want to scratch up your truck that is going to end up being some microwave in the future anyways, do what HiVel said and buy a cheap beater and scratch that all up.... just dont leave it on the side of the trail if it dies.

i got my current runner with 8 miles on it from the dealer, by 50 miles it was out in the woods playing hard. i now have 116k on it and sure i have my scratches and dents and dings but havent you guys ever heard that chicks dig battle scars?

I love driving off road, so the odd scratch and dent here and there is worth the fun for me.

No need to repeat what others have said above. A lot of people (including my wife!) asked me, "Why not get a cheapo Jeep and do off-roading with it?"

IMHO, there is no pride in doing such a thing. The main reason why i will ONLY off-road in my vehicle is because it's like a son to me...the fact that IT can go over a rock or up a ledge makes me proud..."fatherly proud"! Renting a Jeep or getting a cheap used Jeep/Suzuki does not do the same to me...there is no pride in ownership. It's the fact that it's YOUR vehicle and YOUR driving skills (very little on my part) that make it worth wild. And yes, i have deep scratches on my $75K vehicle that will not buff out (and my G is black too)...but i am damn proud of it! Of course, convincing my wife is another story....

4-Wheeling can have it's downsides (scratches, scrapes) but most of the real damage can be avoided if you go off-roading with some people who know the trails and can help guide you on the trail. If you decide to go out on your own, be prepared to walk the trail ahead to familiarize yourself with obstacles before you encounter them. Also remember, speed and off-roading are usually mutually exclusive ( there are times when this is not the case, but most of the time, speed creates more problems).

I think that offroading def comes at a price.... U can be as careful as u want, but at one point or another things will get hairy, if ur really trying. I just dont plan on doing anything to crazy with my truck, i do love it and it was expensive so I plan on making sure that it stays in as nice a condition as possible while at the same time meeting my 'naturely' needs
I think the truck is highly capable stock, all it needs is more clearance and better grip for it to basically conquer all id want to hit right now....
Id like to get a gen 1 as my beater, but not too nasty of a beater :-D

Haha, even the mall is dangerous. I know a number of people gotten backed into at the mall, with huge dents and scratches. The only place that would be safe is garage.

I agree with you, any time the vehicle is out on the road, $#!t's going to happen. Sometimes luck's on your side, other times, it's SOL.

there was a time where i wanted my truck to be immaculate. and she was for about 15-20K after i bought her.

i got her with 44K and by around 65 she was offroad.

once you gain a serious love and appreciation for the sport, it makes you care more about building a capable rig, not one you dont want to scratch.

now that doesnt mean i dont want my truck to look presentable, its an 01, and i want it to look ok. i live in the city of boston so i dont really wanna drive a dumper around

i do some light stuff with mine...sucks when all ur buddies with jeeps are laughin their asses of bc a stock 4r sucks off road. ive scraped the bottom of my front bumper, all skid plates(high centered countless times), drag the hitch, exhaust tip, mud flaps, and of course the rear bumper. And actually one thing i notced the other day when i was flexing on a snow pile(i was maxed out with 3 wheels on the ground), i had the "locker" on yet my front right and left rear were spinning. Is this not really a locker or what? because it sure seems like one if u have it on and make a sharp slow turn.
