Dragging feeling

I've been driving my 2006 4 runner for a week now and I've noticed some thing strange. When I'm running along around 30 / 40 mph and let off the gas it feels like the SUV is dragging down instead of coasting. It almost feels like I'm using the brakes. Is the normally?

I've only had mine 7 weeks and I have the same thing. I think it's normal. I actually like it better than my last car that always felt like it was in neutral and coasted too much.

With the aerodynamics of a brick and the weight of a couple elephants, the truck tends to slow down pretty fast when you take you foot off the gas, at least that's my experience with my 2004. So I don't think it's any problem, unless you;re driving wit your e-brake on :

Personally I like that because it gives you far more control of the beast, especially at speed. Give me engine braking any day over always having to use the brakes... I miss the old days of manual transmission.

Its not the weight and aerodynamics doing this, it has something to do with the transmission. My 06 does it also, and its almost as if it is applying brakes, but it just must be the engine braking due to the transmission. Its an odd feeling and to tell you the truth I don't really like it as it ruins down hill coast and you end up having to apply gas in cases you would not. Kind of strange, my Tahoe would let gravity do the work and it was up to you to slow it down, not so with the 4Runner.

Funny because other people (myself included) would complain if the thing _didn't_ have good engine braking, because you'd have to use the brakes more.....damned if ya do, damned if ya don't I guess. I would assume your Tahoe has higher gears than the 4R, but don't know off-hand.

everyone talks about this with the 4runner and FJ cruiser... when you let off the gas, sometimes the tranny things you are trying to slow down more so it keeps it in a gear that causes some engine braking.

now. All cars slow down when you let off the gas, however... the 4runner is by far the first vehicle i've driven that actually RETAINS its speed rather well after letting off the gas.

i have a 4x4 v8 limited, and when i let off the gas at say,, 70 mph.. it takes about 5 seconds to reduce to 60. whereas in my 97' pathfinder i just got rid of, letting off the gas at 70 would put me at about 50 after 5 seconds... huuuuge difference.. the 4runner coasts great. If you want a car that does -not- slow down when you let go of the gas due to engine braking then get a nissan murano.. and enjoy your glorified minivan.. although the tranny is mad smooth (CVT) i'll take the 4runner thanks

granted i only have 650 miles on my 4runner... i'll keep an eye out for this extensive engine braking to occur.. if anything it can be fixed by a computer reprogram if toyota thinks it's a problem.

Here's what is happening. The trans in the 4th gen 4Runner works a little differently then most others. When you are reaching the end of the rev range for a particular gear and let off the gas it will NOT up-shift like most auto transmissions. It stays in that gear and the engine

Yeah, I get this dragging feeling all the time, but I dont have a 4th Gen I have a 3rd. Gents this is what they call the O'L ball and chain better known as the WIFE.
