Drain and fill with Toyota ATF WS

I just did a transmission drain and fill on my 98 limited, not realizing the dealership had given me the WS ATF. I’ve driven about 50km with it in and haven’t noticed any change in the performance of the transmission. Will this cause any problems if I leave it in?

WS (world standard) is meant for trans that operate at higher temps than 3rd gens, so it should do very well.

Technically speaking Toyota WS is not backwards compatible with Dexron III (what our transmissions use). That being said if you've had it in this long then you're probably okay to keep running it. If it were me I would do several drain and fills with a Dexron III compatible transmission fluid or a DIY flush.

EDIT: Toyota WS has a recommended fluid change interval of 60K miles for moderate to heavy use (essentially anyone that doesn't do highway commuting 90% of the miles).

I'm not sure if the WS is backward compatible with your 1998.

I think you will be ok with WS, but as a few dealers what to do.:whoo:

To further complicate this thread, I've noticed better shifts and overall operation switching to a full synthetic ATF. I used Royal Purple but Redline synthetic is also very good.

When you go full synth do you cycle it in doing drain and fills? I know they they can co-exist - just wondering.

I did do a drain and fill several times so you are right, it's not 100% synthetic. I did the math at one point and it's something like 70% synthetic after 3 fills as you cannot completely drain the old fluid out. I did a series of 3 drain and fills using a total of 12 quarts. And yes, by the last time I was draining out relatively new fluid and tossing it, I do realize that.

Cool. I was wondering if people were using some other more extreme/flush technique that I'd prefer to avoid. Thanks for the info

firebirdguy and leonp24, that keep posting their garbage on my posts, are FOOLS. WS is not backward compatible so find out what's used in your tranny and use that.

My 2005 4runner with 160,000 miles has been using Type IV since I bought it new from the Toyota dealer with zero miles. The Japanese that built my car used Type IV. Why would a Toyota dealer change to Type IV from WS in a brand new car from Tokyo? The FOOLS keep telling me to use WS. Jerks. Really FOOLS. Don't follow their advice. You'll be sorry.

The Toyota dealer did a D'F (6 quarts) at 103,000 miles and used Type IV (says so on the dealer receipt). These 3 idiots say they know more than the Toyota dealer. Can you believe how stupid they are?

My 4runner shifts and drives fine on Type IV for 15 years. Toyota recommends Type IV for some Lexus models and other Toyotas too.

I'll bet you 100$ bucks you need Type IV in your runner. Type IV is backward compatible, while WS is not.

I know that Toyota put WS fluid in your transmission when they built it. And, I know that you are too focused on getting everyone to believe your baseless claims to actually listen to facts or sound advice. I'm starting to feel sorry for you, but stupid is as stupid says.
