I want to say first that I've had a viper remote starter installed last year around this time. In the summer it worked great, but in the winter, even last year, I've had some difficulty with it. Seems like it requires more juice from the battery than just starting it with the key. Sometimes, in cold weather only, I press the button and the engine turns and turns but doesn't fire. If I catch it soon enough, I can run in the car, turn the key, and she starts right up. Other times, like this morning, I didn't catch the turning, but not firing, of the engine and it turns to clicks. Dead battery.
I've been experiencing a dead battery on some mornings, even without using the remote. It's been cold around here lately, lows in the teens and some single digits.
I had a dead battery before Christmas, so I cleaned the terminals and connections, put some of that terminal grease on, and had it running, driving around until I got it checked at autozone. 96% charged and a good battery, so the meter says. This battery is a little over two years old and has a 3-year free replacement time. They said its fine an no reason to replace it.
This morning, remote start inside. Go back downstairs to finish getting ready for work, and 5 minutes later I come outside to a vehicle that isn't on. Shit. I get in, and just clicks. Dead battery. I jump start it withy mother's car, and I get going.
Everything runs fine all day long.
I think I ruled out the alternator due to it being fully charged at autozone after driving around for a while. I believe the battery is rated for 640 cold cranking amps. Is this right? I think it is.
Can my remote starter be at fault and drawing energy from the battery even when off? Maybe it doesn't drain as much in warmer weather so I never notice?
Can there be something else drawing power when off? I know the car chargers don't work when off. No lights left on. All locked up tight overnight.
I feel like going back to autozone and popping that battery in te counter and demanding another free of charge.
What am I missing?
