dreaded dash rattle - omg going insane

I had a rattle in the drivers side rear door of my 3rd gen that I never could figure out (and I rarely fail when I set my mind to it).

I took off the inner door panel, removed the window, etc.... put everything back together and still there. Drove me absolutely insane.

To this day, I still have nightmares about it. PTSD is forever.

I have the same issue. I took it to toyota yesterday and they could not figure it out. Sounds almost like two styrofoam pieces rubbing together at a distance. I can't stand it. Happens above 45 mph. Any suggestions?

I have a few rattles in mine, but I find that when the temperature is warmer they tend to go away. At least for my 4runner, I think it is the cold weather and the materials contracting slightly.

But yeah, rattles drive me crazy!

I have so many rattles on mine and unfortunately I'm out of warranty and I'll just have to deal with them. Getting them fixed would be a nightmare and costly. I've driven about 99.9% on road too, no crazy off roading.

1) Front driver side window rattles if I lower it about 1-2" going over bumps
2) Sunroof rattles when I tilt it upwards going over bumps
3) Front passenger chair seems like the seat frame rattles when going over bumps
4) Back seat (60%) makes a rattle if it is reclined in a certain position over bumps
5) There is something in the cargo area that makes a weird creaking/raking noise over bumps. Can't for the life of me reproduce it.

I don't hate my 4Runner but I wouldn't be opposed to getting trading it in for the 6th gen.

I have the same rattle.... it's been there since Xmas. I've intended to pull the panel open and see if this is my problem.

Check the driver's "dead pedal" or footrest. Soon as it gets cold it makes that noise.

The little cover above the rearview mirror mount rattles/squeaks sometimes. Noticed it after having the windshield replaced.

Dash rattle is the worst.

Just got my 16 2 weeks ago and while not a dash rattle. I swear I hear some strange noise coming out of the dash around the head unit- sounds like 2 pieces of nylon fabric rubbing against each other for a split second. Think fat girl wearing parachute pants - but the swish sound is only for a second and repeats like once every 8 minutes. Could be coming out of speakers - even when the head unit is off.

Anyone else experience this?

I've got 40k on my 4R and no rattles so this is very surprising to me, but man just be glad you don't drive a Jeep GC, I was chasing down different rattles like every other month with that POS, always different spots.

I have nothing else of substance to add… carry on.

Yep. My new (back in 95) Wrangler had more rattles than Nancy Pelosi's vibrator drawer.

Was fun off-road with the bikini top on, but drove me nuts in the city.

Funny looking back, I now have almost 80k on my runner and still no rattles. Occasionally some wind buffeting in crosswinds on the roof rack, but that's to be expected.

Blitzk-Funny I once had a 95 wrangler (bought nearly new) back in the day myself, it was the best of the three Jeeps I owned.

Ya know, I really did like it. The 4.0 was not bad power-wise and I loved popping off the top in the summer and carrying the bikini for when I wanted it.

Mine was black on black and it looked good.

But....

Not the best traveling vehicle in the world by a long shot. About a year after I bought it, I took my youngest kid back to my Mom's house east of Colorado and got into a nasty cold/wind/flurry situation.

I had the heater on full and him wrapped up in a thick quilt, but brother, it was cold. At highway speeds those plastic doors and roof start flapping and you might as well be on a motorcycle. ;-)

I enjoyed it. If Toyota made a Rubicon, there would be one in my garage.

I had a rattle behind the dash on my 2010 TE. Come to find out, the noise was made outside the cabin from the front fender liner clips. These are the clips that hold the rubber mud shield on to protect the engine.

It's worth a look.

After reading your post, I checked the mud shield clips and sure enough, the driver's side were loose. Shaking the mud shield produced the same sound I'd been hearing for several months. The dealer is currently waiting on new clips to come in.

I used the ghetto fix for the same problem--gorilla tape. Its held for 2 years now.

I'm going to have to do something similar. After three trips to the dealer to get the new clips in, they are just as loose as the ones they replaced.

2016 Noise is loose plastic items under dash

The noise sounds like it is behind the dash but I found a few "clip on" items under the dash that are loose. The drivers side floor air end piece, the OBD and an at this time an unidentified plug item were loose. The unidentified plug item is still loose. It was not as easily silenced as the other two. I'll get it again though.

I look forward to asking the dealer / Toyota to permanently fix this issue. I hope they have a better solution than pieces of cardboard strategically placed. Thankfully still under warranty!

I had this rattle at around 55-60 miles MPH. I had the Dealership techs drive it. They could hear it but couldn't figure it out. Sounded like it was behind the dash. Thanks to this forum, I figured out it was the clips in the wheel well holding the engine splash guard pieces. Had dealership fix during service. Problem is gone.

I've had this noise for awhile and finally decided to address it as I knew what it was thanks to this forum. Pulled the clips out and zip tied the rubber shield, used a washer on each side of the rubber. The noise is gone.

Passenger side dash squeek

Hi All,

2017 SR5 premium with front passenger side dash squeak coming from glove box area.

The passenger side air bag behind the glove box is very heavy. Dealer removed the dashboard and tightened up the airbag's screws which fasten to the surrounding area. No more squeak on passenger side near glove box, at least for now.

Thanks for the info. Would you say your noise was a squeak more than a tapping or rattle noise?

After Moab last week, I started getting a rattle and squeak that was driving me ****ing bonkers. Turns out mine was the trim piece on the corner of the windshield, that covers part of the A pillar and edge of the main cowl.

Those corner caps can be a pain! Did you just push it back down to secure it? I actually just gave up and ordered a new one for my passenger side for $23 or so and the new one is quiet for now. Hopefully I installed it correctly. I found it easiest to slide the long skinny part up and into the windshield/A-pillar groove first and then snap into the cowl. Is that how you did it or is there a better way? I also trimmed or shaved slightly the front clip (that clips to the cowl) to get my driver’s side to snap to the cowl more securely.
