Drive not engaging

This is the second time this has happened, so I want to bring it up now and start looking into the cause....


When i back out of a parking spot, it is fine. I then put the car in drive, and it doesn't go. RPM's wont go above 3.5k roughly. The car slowly goes forward as if I am at idle (even though I am pressing on the gas).

I turn off the car, turn it back on and all is fine. No problems after that. Anyone have this happen?

Have you checked your fluid? Trying putting down into 1st.

Anything?

I personally haven't checked the fluids.. but I guess I should never take someones word for it....

Its an auto, so it should go into first when i put it in drive.

I have seen some cases where the transmission was not going into 1st when drive is selected, but it would when manually shifted into 1st.

i would have checked the fluid myself before posting questions. If the fluid is fine, your slip clutches or torque converter are probably going out

Sounds also like it may be an electrical problem if it works fine after turning it off and starting it again. The older Chryslers were notorious for this and also just not wanting to shift. Usually a solonoid.

2000 Limited

Alaskanboi, did you ever determine what the problem was on with your drive not engaging?

My 2000 Limited is doing something very similar. I put it in Drive and it does not engage until I get my RPM's up. I drop it into Low or 2nd and it works fine. After a few minutes, it all goes back to normal and Drive works just fine from a stop. It's cold here (27 degrees), but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with my problem.

Anyone have any ideas?
