While idling with clutch engaged, it’s quiet. Disengaged, even in neutral, there is an airy metallic whirring to whining noise. Rev the engine and it gets a bit louder until the sound of the engine drowns it out. Every so often it dissipates to the point that it seems to go away, but that's quite rare and the whirring soon returns. Depress the clutch it completely disappears.
Beyond that, once in gear and moving, there is a high pitched whining noise that grows louder and higher pitched the faster I go. It is present and loud when accelerating but still there when decelerating or coasting. Seems to be different than the whirring heard when idle.
Also, notice that the truck really doesn't want to move from a standstill. Can feel a lot of resistance when trying to take off. Tried to push it and it wouldnt budge under my strength.
A known problem just repaired: I had a rear passenger side hub seal go bad and was quite low on gear oil in the rear diff for a bit. Universal Joint replaced as well as was bad. Have been told I need a new ring and pinion set. Teeth on the ring are showing grooves and the pinion is pretty roughed up though no gouges or anything.
Clutch and throwout bearing replaced about 2 months ago. All was fine and then about two weeks later upon transitioning into 1st from a standstill, the truck would jerk back and forth until fully disengaged and and moving. Jerkiness also evident in other gear/shifting transitions though not as pronounced. Thought maybe it was a break in thing, so gave it a while, then took it back for a check. They took it out, seemed to be fine.
After having the clutch put back in, the u-joint replaced, and the hub seal fixed, I am still hearing these noises. The jerkiness, however, for now, is gone.
My main concern is that I will replace the ring and pinion, but that it may only be a symptom of greater issue. Then again, maybe the main problem was the hub seal leak that caused the unlubricated diff to put a strain on the entire drive train system.
