Drive shaft replaced with drive shaft with from GX470?

I have read a few threads that people have done this to eliminate the 'clunk' when putting the 4R into drive (I have gotten this a few times and it scared me to death).

What's the part number for the shaft? I want to replace mine and eliminate any reliability issues in the future (as well as greasing).

My gx470 has the same clunk so not a garenteed fix. Six zerks require grease every 7500 miles. Just get under there and lube it.

I guess this would be the cheaper route! Are there instructions for how to do this? I suspect mine haven't been greased in some time.

Mine doesn't respond to zerking it for more than a couple days. Was planning on the gx swap as I believe it's 'sealed' enough it doesn't need constant lube.

Doing the 5th gen brake upgrade first to ensure the clunk isn't the calipers sticking.

I use Mobil 1 synth like most others here. What makes green any better or was that just a general recommendation?

I tried a couple different types of grease before switching to the green stuff and none of it worked as well to get rid of the stop light "clunk". Just one data point...

I had the clunk, scared the sh*t out of the first couple times, I used the green grease about a month ago and no clunks since.

I was able to only find 3 out of the 6 zerks, mind you I had very little room doing this on my garage floor. Next time I get that chance to put it up on the lift I will grease all 6

As an engineer, I loathe anecdotal evidence. Until it comes to my 4runner. Almost always rely on it ha. Seriously, I'll prob pick up a tube and try it. Beats $300 on the new drive shaft.

Lube it good and the clunk will go away. I always use Lucas red and tacky grease. Does the trick. No more clunk.

Toyota actually specs two different greases for the drive shafts...one for the U-joints and another for the slip yokes. Check your manual, it's in there.

Personally, I've been using Valvoline Durablend for both. The U-joint probably doesn't need to be hit every oil change..I usually see joint expansion with only 2-3 pumps from the gun. The axle wrap thump seems to come from the slip yoke binding, which can take 20+ pumps from the gun before you see the joint expand.

Lots of folks complain the thump is a design defect or such b/c Lexus updated the GX shaft in response to complaints, but driveshaft lubrication is a documented maintenance item in the 4Runner manual...at least for my 2003, so it's not like Toyota tried to pull a fast one on us. And if we don't believe in lifetime lubricants (WS ATF, diffs, xfer case), why would we trust the "liftetime" grease in a sealed slip yoke?

I remember seeing somewhere that Toyota updated the service manual for the use of only one (I could be wrong).

I also remember seeing that the Mobile1 synthetic grease (pink stuff) meets or exceeds the requirement for the grease, which is why most use it.
