Recently I've been noticing what seems to be a distinct roaring noise I think is coming from something in my motive train on my 05 V8 4x4. I have not noticed it before, at least this loud. It happens when I'm around 40-45 mph. I just had my transmission fluid changed (not flushed). Have 108,000 miles. I'm wondering if this is typical with Miles and how much noise I should expect? If there a common issue problem with the V8 4x4s that might be of concern?

its most likely a wheel bearing.

jack up each front tire, and shake the wheel, top to bottom. also spin it as fast as you can, then both listen, and place your hand on the fender above the tire. you should be able to figure out which one is making noise.

You will have to jack up the front and rear. Then put the truck in neutral and you can spin each tire. If you do the jack up all four you can't spin each wheel freely. It's AWD.

Update: there was a bad rear wheel bearing but it turned out most of the noise was coming from bad bearings in my rear differential. Got it all repaired now and nice and quiet. My mechanic who has 2 Toyota's with the same motor said it's not that uncommon to have issues with the full time 4 wheel drives rear ends.

Update: there was a bad rear wheel bearing but it turned out most of the noise was coming from bad bearings in my rear differential. Got it all repaired now and nice and quiet. My mechanic who has 2 Toyota's with the same motor said it's not that uncommon to have issues with the full time 4 wheel drives rear ends.

Daily driver. Occasional off road. I did do some towing of a heavy ski boat in the past, but not any more. I bought it used with 78000 miles I think and don't think the diff fluids have ever been changed.

My mechanic owns a landcruiser and a Tundra. He's a big Toyota fan and says they have seen this problem more with the all wheel drive 4runners and older tundras. Don't know how common, but I do know my Dads V6 2 x2 has the same problem, which he noticed early on after purchasing it new.

What's the typical cost or shop hours required for the rear wheel bearings? I've done the fronts in about an hour each but the rears look like a lot of work - trying to mentally prepare for this, or get my wallet ready.

I am having the same issue with mine. Did you have to have your complete differential replaced or was your mechanic able to replace just the bad bearings? And if so how much did that cost??

Just replaced the bearings. Along with new fluid and gasket it was $590. That's an independent mechanic. I won't go to the dealership or any chain shops.

Was that for all the bearings in the rear end or just the outer bearings?

I have no idea? Receipt says bearing kit. Knowing my mechanic, they would probably have replaced everything if it's not that much harder to get to.
