Driveline lash, loss of power after timing belt repair- any ideas?

Hi all,
I just picked up my 4runner after spending $1500 at the dealer. I'm not happy.

It's a 2006 V8 Sport and has hit the 90K mark.
The dealer quoted me $1500 for:
Timing belt
Water Pump
Fuel injection cleaning - as recommended by toyota every 30K now.
Differential fluid replacement
Tranny fluid replacement
Coolant
...and the other expected, filters, fluids, etc.

I picked it up after the service department was closed. Started it up and there was some loud belt squeal. I drove for a few miles expecting it to go away as the engine warmed up, but it didn't. The squeal would get louder when I got on the throttle. So I went back and complained to the sales staff who have forwarded my complaint to the service folks.

Then I drove the twenty miles home and things got weird.
16 miles out I stop at a red light and it feels like I get tapped from behind. My rate of speed was decreasing, I expect to stop and suddenly there's a violent lurch like someone tapped my bumper.
Of course, no one tapped my bumper and I figure I'm imagining things.

Mile 18 and I'm at another red light. I hit the gas to go and I get slammed back into my seat. I mean slammed. My neck hurts from the violent start.
It's like the engine spun free for a minute - although I don't remember the engine racing - and then everything caught at once and the 4runner jerked forward.

Mile 20, I'm home, driving up our hilly drive and I really have to dip hard into the throttle to get up the hill. I keep giving it more throttle and the 4runner stays at 10mph. There was no acceleration and a hint of bogging down.

So I don't know enough about vehicles to have a solid idea what's happening. The squealing belt is, I assume, a squealing belt.
The lurching, driveline stutter is - what? - the tranny fluid? They said that they don't force the fluid out under pressure, they use a gentle vacuum, but something doesn't feel right.
Why too does the engine feel bogged down going up the hill? It reminds of a time I pinched the exhaust closed on another vehicle I had.

Any advice you have is welcome.
I do plan on bringing the truck in first thing tomorrow.

Two things to note:
1. No error codes, no warning lights.
2. Ironically, I went to a new dealer because my last dealer had these same kinds of issues. Every repair the truck went back at least twice. :ybrick:

I agree that most of it sounds transmission related. Low fluid, wrong fluid, something went wrong with the flush, who really knows but the lurching sounds transmission related. I'd be hesitant to drive it 20 miles back to the dealer.

The squealing belt sound is probably an unrelated issue. I doubt it's anything serious but I'd definitely get them to fix that too.

Good luck.

Thanks guys.
I totally buy the transmission being the culprit.
It seemed such a minor part of the job that it's hard to believe it got mucked up.

For some reason I thought they'd pay special attention to their work on my 4runner after explaining the trouble I had at the last dealership.

If it's work I can do, I do it.
If I can't do the work I'm happy to pay to get it done.
Simple.

It's this going back and forth a few times to get the work done right and the arguments along the way....gah.

A good mechanic is precious...
...and so is a good informative forum.

Thanks again.

You folks win.
Transmission fluid was down about a quart and a half.

Belt squeal was likely a coolant spill. Belt and pulleys were cleaned and inspected. All is apparently well.

They're delivering it now. :guitar3:

I vote for improperly filled transmission fluid.

I hope this is it but I had similar behavior in my wife's Honda after she let a shop talk her in to a tranny flush. The flush freed up crap in the tranny which clogged passages. I had to replace the damn thing.

Not trying to worry you but I'm approaching 200k and need the timing belt & tranny fluid replaced and have concerns. I'll do the drain and fill but won't let them flush it.

Eh... Depending on how they do their "flush", what they filled it with, and if they checked the fluid level (sounds like they didn't, they just used the machine and didn't recheck like you're supposed to) it could probably be fine. But I personally don't like putting anything that isn't factory specs in the vehicle, specifically coolant and transmission.

Apparently they don't do the flush anymore.
They don't push out the fluid with force. They have a slow vacuum tool that pulls out the old fluid.

At least that's what they said to me.
I'd heard of issues with a tranny flush before and was assured that wouldn't be an issue. They definitely don't use the term "flush" anymore.

That's promising, they probably failed to check the fluid correctly.

So how did things turn out? Did topping off the transmission fluid make everything start acting normally again?

It appears to be alright, although I've only driven it a mile or two. Monday I head down to Boston so that will be the real test.

So far so good and reassuring when the service manager said what the members here said.

:cheer2:

So your not supposed to flush the transmission? Only a complete replace? my mechanic recently did a flush, and hes a good one. I told him, I thought you weren't supposed touch the transmission fluid. he said no its okay.
I guess its been 500+ miles. I'm sure we would have noticed somethingi f it happened
in OP's case, anyone think that could have done any damage??? or he would know immediately?

It's been explained many times that the WS ATF being "lifetime" fluid from Toyota is very... how do I put this delicately? ...stretched?

100k fluid service interval for normal driving would not be a bad preventative maintenance. If you know how to do the service and check the fluid level it isn't an issue, additionally many people will use "flush" to mean drain & filling it multiple times vs. a machine flush (I do sometimes myself), so you may want to make sure you're clear on what method was used.

I'm not sure but I've been told some flush machines have an additive added that cleans as it flushes. Apparently that's what the shop that did my wife's Accord used - the damage was apparent within a couple miles. I've been told since then that shops are now using a low pressure vacuum without chemicals added.
