Driver didn't make it

Here is a pix of a wrecked 3G T4R. Looks like a Limited Edition. The driver was from my neighborhood. Here is the story from www.delawareonline.com

Police have released more details about this mornings fatal crash involving an SUV on I-495 in Fox Point.

A 34-year-old Middletown man was driving north, just north of the Edgemoor Road interchange, when he apparently failed to negotiate a curve, struck a guardrail, went off the right side of the road, down an embankment and overturned.

The exact time of the crash is not known, but the vehicle remained upside-down and out of sight until a tractor-trailer driver spotted the vehicle about 8:15 a.m. and called 911. Troopers drove by the scene several times before they were able to locate the vehicle.

The driver of the 1999 Toyota 4-Runner was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released.

Police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh asked anyone with information to call (302) 477-8501.

The crash backed up northbound traffic on the interstate as police investigated.

Ouch. I wonder if he was bucked up? It looks like a crash that could have been possibly been survived...

Makes you realize how lucky many accident survivors really are if someone died in this.

My mechanic showed me a 4runner in his shop that was struck from the rear left and totally crumpled, killing a backseat passenger. A quarter of the truck just disintegrated. Made me realize that sheer vehicle size is not necessarily gonna save you.

Sorry to hear about your friend. You're right that even though the 4Runner is great protection, it's not impervious. In January, one of the priests at our church flipped his 4Runner at highway speed and he's now a paraplegic (but still serving as a priest).

Makes me want to build a cage. I know there is the hoop just behind the back seat but it could be improved on I'm sure.
I feel for his family.

No. He was not using a seatbelt. I monitor Public Safety Radio with the use of a communications receiver. There were comments from the Medic to the hospital indicating no seatbelt use. It may or may not have saved his life judging from the wreckage.

Made me realize that sheer vehicle size is not necessarily gonna save you.

But unfortunatly the sheer size of the vehicle hitting you might kill you.


There's a lot of large vehicles on the road today and then there's also a lot of smaller vehicles and that segment is growing with rising gas prices and no matter how safe a vehicle is rated if you get hit by a big 'ol Ford Excursion it won't matter.

Well another big factor besides the seat belt is, who knows how long he was there before the trailer driver spotted him. My sympathies.
