Driver Door Open Hinge Position

Hey All,

I searched but couldn't find an answer for this. Is there a way to adjust the positions on the driver door when you open it? In other words, when you open any of the doors, they usually have 2 positions that they’ll catch and hold at. My driver door seems to have lost its stiffness in those positions and will readily swing back closed again. Is there a way to “tighten” those positions back again? I park on a hill and every time I’m getting in/out it’s a battle with the door wanting to slam closed on me. The other doors don’t have the problem, they seem to hold their open positions fine.

Any advice?

Thanks,

John

There's no way to adjust it, you will need to replace the door check, it's the part that stops the door from swinging open to far and also controls keeping the door opened, the tension on the arm is gone due to wear.

I would first check around at your local savage yards for one, otherwise you will have to get one from Toyota.

Bummer, but thanks for letting me know AuSeeker.

I just replaced mine a few weeks ago for the same symptoms you’re describing. Toyota is fairly proud of this part - seems expensive for what it is, especially at dealer prices. If you have an eBay account search “FJ CRUISER door check” and you’ll see that the part can be had for around $40 SHIPPED. The part is compatible between our 4Runners and the FJ.

That’s the best price I’ve seen, aside from used parts...

If you do go the salvage route, know that the parts are the same for both front doors. They install one side up for the drivers and the other for the passenger. It is marked with a "L" & "R". I would get the passenger side to get one with less wear.

Or swap yours out.

That's really cool, I'm gonna swap mine!

mine just makes a super loud noise as soon as you hit the final open position, like a loud clunk. Kind of annoying.

So I found the door check on eBay, thanks CJFONNER and watched a video on YouTube on how to remove the door panel and replaced my door check a week ago. Works great and saved me a bunch of money that I'm sure the dealer would've charged me! Thanks for your advice everybody!
