driver seat modification

What can I do to make the driver's seat more comfortable? I know the seats are too low to the floor and do not provide much thigh support. However, the main concern is the overall comfort of the driver's seat. I am constantly twisting and turning and adjusting the seat. I just don't have enough room for my back to fit between those huge lateral supports. I am 6'7 and 235lbs.

Do I need to have the padding modified or look into replacing the entire seat?

You've got my problem but I'm nowhere near your size. I find the drivers seat very uncomfortable also, probably the worst of any vehicle I have had. I don't know what to do about it, but I'd rather drive my beat up Nissan frontier than my 06 Sport on a long trip.

my problem has to do with the width. I just can't fit into these seats comfortably. I have enough head room and ok thigh support. What to do about these seats? The design is the worst. I have never experienced anything like this.

These seats need to be flat. The "lateral support" gives me no room.
 
My 2 cents -

The 4Runner is a mid sized SUV - there's not much space width wise.

Either - change to a l/c or sequoia or maybe go to a custom car place and ask about different seats.

I doubt that seats from the bigger trucks will fit but maybe a custom seat from Recaro etc might work.

Did you not notice the size of the truck when you tested it? I'm 5'10" and 230 and I noticed the size was tight for me. At 6'7" I can't imagine how you could get comfortable in a 4R.

I agree the seats are very uncomfortable. If I had the $ I'd change them for something better.

True...

The seat is definitely uncomfortable. My thigh is always asking for support... even with the thigh support all the way up. It's not just the height, but it's too short and doesn't extend far enough. Some of the BMWs are the best in this department (don't get me wrong, I'm not comparing the two brands at all, lol).

I'm 6'1" and 230 lb. and have the same problem like all of you guys.

If you can find a better seat that doesn't look weird, please let me know.
 
This is the second 4runner that I have owned, so I am familiar with them.

I have plenty of room, as a matter of fact I have more room than in the second generation I owned. It is not the amount of space it is the design of the seat. These seats not being "flat" like in some other truck and suvs.

Funny - I've owned a 1st gen pickup, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen and I think they are definitely getting smaller around the driver. The footwell area appears much smaller, primarily because of the huge centre consoles these days. I put landcruiser seats in my 2nd gen which where way bigger than my stock seats.
 
Maybe they are getting smaller.

Do you think I could get a seat from another vehicle to work with my 4runner?
 
I'm 6'3" 195lbs. This is my 2nd T4R (had an '04 Sport). I just sold my FJ Cruiser and picked up a new '06 Sport 4x4. The FJ's seats were even worse. I actually like the T4R seat, a lot! The problem, as with my '04, is the thigh support. I put washers in the front to raise my '04 seat up some which helped. My '06 has power and seems to be a better seat, but again, lacking in thigh support. I plan to try the washer trick again but I've only had it a few days with a 30 minute drive as the longest drive so it's not a big deal.....yet.
 
I have a new 2006 4Runner. I'm 5' 7" and 140 lb. My seat is the most uncomfortable seat I've ever had. Bad upper and lower back support, bad thigh support and no side support. I'm thinking of selling it after only 500 miles.
 
I am about 5'10" and 175lbs and I actually find the seats in the 4Runner fairly comfortable... Much better than the cushy seats I had in my Acura TL.

When I read this I almost fell out of my chair/ 4 runner seat! this is like saying....hmmmm i wonder why my jeans are so small ...must be b/c the dryer shrank them..damn those dryer gremblins!

I'm 6'4 235lbs and think the seats are pretty comfortable too. I owen a 2001 Prelude too which really has narrow seats which you really are pinched into!
 
Its personal preferance. Im 6"2, 280lbs. And before we get into the fat kid jokes, lol. im a large framed guy the size of an NFL linebacker, i have wide shoulders and a 40" waist. I fit fine in my seat on my 2001 4Runner. Now my Acura RSX i had before, those seats were freakin comfy! They were sport seats, leather, and they hugged you like a grizzly bear.
 
I have a '93 runner and '06. 6'1" 180lbs and I think the seats in both are fine. I guess I used to the "sport car" sit on the floor attitude of the 4runner seats. However, I also do find that the front of the seat does not go far enough up for thigh support, but I had no complaints during a recent 1700 mile road trip.

BMW's are great for seats too as someone said. (Had a 2000 328Ci) Thier sport seats have an extension on the front that will get a bolster closer to your knees for better thigh support. But they are DEEPLY bolstered and the starter of the thread would HATE those because I think the '06 4runner seats are WIDE as a freeway between the lateral supports compared to all my other cars.

I am 6'7 240 lbs. I used to own a second generation 4runner so I know those seat were comfortable. I started this thread to see if someone would help me or if someone had done a modification. I really didn't start the thread so you could come on here and tell me how comfortable they were to you and how you don't have a problem with them. I do have a problem with them and would like a fix. thanks.

What are you talking about?

Your analogy makes no sense bc you are taking my statement out context.

The statement was made to a previous post about 4runners getting smaller in driver's side room with each generation. Which I really don't think that they are.

I started the thread to get some help in modifying the seat cushions yet all I get is people telling how comfortable they are for them.
 
bad seats

i would like to know if the gx470 seats would fit in there. i went from a montero, with cap. seats to these, and yes i agree they are horrible.
 
If the 4R doesn't have side airbags, I wonder if an upholstery shop can remove some of the foam/cushion material from the side bolsters and redo the fabric. That should make the seatback a little more flat.

Daaamn....You gained 5 pounds in two weeks...?! you're not going to fit through the rear hatch pretty soon, never mind the driver's seat. :p
