Driver's seat for 6.1 feet people

Hi ALL,
I am new to this forum .. I joined here because i recently (2 weeks before)
I bought a 1999 4 runner with 4wd sr5 cloth interiors. I absolutely love the truck ..It's got good power and drivers really well, I ave not taken it offroading yet though.. My only and MAIN problem is i am 6.1 and have broad shoulders I am finding the driver seat very uncomfortable (cloth interior)
1)There is almost no head room i am okay to live with it.
2) Off late i am getting back ache i drive 30 mins a day in the morning and almost the same in the evening. I am sure its the seat because i have driven other cars and i do not see this problem on those days.And when i am driving i am constantly shifting.
3)Do you guys think i can swap the seat with some non 4 runner seats ?If so what seats would fit well..


I live in san diego any pointers to ease the situation will be of GREAT help ..

Hello fellow San Diegan!

You most assuredly can swap your seats. I have seen it done in a thread or two. I am 6-2 and do not have this problem. Perhaps we have different torso sizes. Anyways have you tried adjusting the seat vertically? I have a limited and I can do do this. Also there is a lumbar support in my drivers seat. Making the back part nearly straight vertical (as much as is allowed) will help your back out. You may want to consider re-doing your foam cushions. Each is about $50 I believe.

2 new heavy duty racing style seats will probably run you $600.

Each is about $50 I believe.

Foam is around $125 for the back on the Sport seat at least. It did fix my back issues in driving the 4Runner long distances though, and took about an hour to pull the seat and swap it out.

not sure i agree; i am also 6'1" and was overweight when i drove 6,000 miles out west in 10 days.

i never felt tired or sore and i have the cloth seats. i do leave the lumbar support "ON" all the time though.

ps FYI i have the seat ALL THE WAY BACK..and very upright but not to the point where my head touches the headliner. not sure if that position keeps me from getting a backache but its worked so far so i aint changing it...

I have the same problems the OP does. I'm a large 6'4", and I rack my head on the roof and get a sore back if I'm in my wife's truck for hours.

Same boat, but I think my problem is that my seat is worn out so little to no cushion.

You can use most other seats (so long as fits, some are too wide) but you'll have to run the seats to a welder to swap the new seats on your seat rails/bracket. I'm sure if you know someone or find a decent shop it wouldn't be much money for the rail swap.

I'm 6'3 260lbs and have no issues that a few rest stops on long drives can't cure. I do have the leather seats with the lumbar support though that is adjustable. I also have 2 sections of compressed discs in my back from getting blown off an MRAP.

OP, if you want to go stock/cheap option...I would suggest going to a junkyard and trying to find stock leathers, which is what I'm planning to do myself once I get more time (driver seat is destroyed). I'm also 6'1", large build (250lbs, lift alot). I don't have issues with stock Limited leathers, though my head does hit the ceiling when I hit big bumps. I am getting a 93 4runner leather seats (some rips) for 150$ of craigslist. Do these fit my 99 4Runner sr5 ..
