driver's side outside mirror

Like the idiot I am, I accidently "tapped" my driverside mirror on the side of the garage door, of course, the mirror itself popped out and broke on the ground. There is no damage to the black housing the mirror sits in and the automated controls work fine. I went to Toyota hoping I could buy a piece of glass that would fit in the hole and figured I could use some strong glue / double sided tape to mount it to the black frame. However, I found out they do not sell individual pieces like that and I would have to pay $315.00 in order to replace the entire housing. Has anyone run into this problem before and happens to have a cheaper solution?

If not, I will be calling my insurance company.

HMM.....i think i remember new signal mirrors being cheaper. if they are...i'd get those....do a search on this forum.
 
The outer mirror assembly for the SR5 is shown as $181.75 (p/n 87940-35620) RETAIL in the 2003 parts listing. Anything above that was pure mark up by your stealer. The passenger side is $223.73 -- don't ask me why the price difference? The housings also come painted for ~$280.

The listing also shows that the mirror glass assembly can be ordered without the housing.

So it looks like you'd be all set for ~$55. Partznet has it for $43.52.

Another option, mentioned above, is your local (or online) junk yard. They can probably get you what you need. Finally, a glass shop may be able to custom cut a piece to fit -- assuming the rest of your hardware is in good shape.

What about getting a replacement mirror (just the mirror) that they sell in R&S or Pep Boys. As close to the original size as possible (maybe a little bigger) and grind it to shape. Who knows maybe they have the exact size.

I think somebody put a "how to" thread or a link to one on this board somewhere which deals with how to change the mirrors. The scary bit seemed to be popping off the interior panels on the door to get at the fixings holding the mirror housing on to the door. If I remember right you have to remove the mirror housing to get at the mounting of the glass - so the labour to switch the glass is probably not much less than switching the whole unit. The parts cost is of course a lot less.

Somebody here did suggest that the wiring for heated mirrors is all there as well in fact and that you can put in the heated mirror glass and get yourself an upgrade when doing this - my dealer denied this was the case but that did not surprise me.
 
I don't need heated mirrors, and I talked to Toyota about replacing just the mirror (which apparently also has plastic mount on the back which attaches to the motor) and he said that 9 / 10 they break the entire unit trying to assemble it and they can't be held responsible. It seemed odd to me, If anyone knows where I can get the mirror itself to fit that molding I would appreciate it. At the moment, my plan is to buy the entire new housing and get a local shop to install it for me becausse Toyota charges $114 an hour. I was considering installing just the new mirror, if anyone has done this and could give some advice I would appreciate it, but the technician said often it doesn't work and breaks the part.

(luckily I only need black and don't have to pay $280)

abin: my garage door is fine, I actually lightly hit the brick / cement area on the corner, not the door itself. ...live and learn

i'm thinking i might as well buy these signal mirrors, for 2 signal mirrors it appears they are only about $75 more, also I was planning on getting this stuff installed at the same place the guy who made the post got it installed, at trick trucks in chantilly.
 
I ended up ordering just the glass with the mounting bracket behind it and i am going to try and replace just that myself (since it's the $50 option). If i can get it to work, i will post how I did it, with pictures, in case any of you are interested.
 
Would be very interested to see pics if you do it yourself - I want one day to switch to heated mirrors (a thing I really miss from my last truck in the winter here) and what you will do will be very close to the same process I will have to go through.
