Driveshaft options and questions

FYI, Tom Woods has renamed the flange at the diff to "Toyota 3rd Design Flange". Here is my invoice if anyone needs the measurements. Built and shipped in 1 day!

3 different possible lengths:
- manual trans with j-shift
- auto with j-shift (or early limited non-multi-mode)
- auto with multi-mode

All '01/'02's are multi-mode autos. Earlier had the other choices too...

-Charlie

Does manual include 3RZ's & 5VZ's? Which one is the longest?

The problem I'm having is that I put in an e-locker axle from a 2000 limited & it seems like I have to pull the axle forward a lot to get the driveshaft to bolt up. Maybe the diff/flange length is different between 4cyl/6cyl?

EDIT: When I look at Chuckles DS measurement above his is 1" longer than mine.

A 3rz manual and 5vz manual are different.

A 3rz Manual and 5VZ Auto are the same part number. I have a shaft from a V6 auto in my 3rz manual currently.

Not much help but that's all I got!

I suspect the 5VZ manual would be the longest option which seems to make sense based on the 2 previous posts.

From what I've read there are two different 5VZ auto lengths. One with multi mode & one without. The multi mode auto is the shortest because the transfer case is the longest.

This.

I made the uninformed mistake of buying a complete rear DS that came out of a V6/auto with the standard non-multi-mode t-case. When I tried to install it, I found it to be about 1.5" too long. Our driveshafts have the last few inches of the tubing neck down to a smaller diameter ( compared to the diameter of the main part of it ) making it impossible for my drive shaft shop to shorten it enough for re-use.

I'm digging up an older post. I am about to buy a ds from Tom Woods are all the 3rd gen flanges the same? Or are they different like the lengths are different?
I ordered front and rear driveshafts from them last year, but I can’t seem to find my invoice or measurements. Off the top of my head the transfer case flanges are the same front and rear, but aren’t the same pattern as the front/rear diff flanges. I’ll try to find my invoice or receipt tomorrow when I’m back at work. Hopefully someone can chime in before then.

This is correct.

I can't find my invoice either but make sure you measure twice before ordering.

I going to play the role of captain obvious, but they definitely aren't the same as the 2wd and 4wd shafts are very different. If there are variations based on what type of t-case or year, I'm not aware of them. I bought a used stock one for my 97 4wd from a 99 several years ago and from what I could tell they were identical. That's only one data point though.

The rear prop shafts are different between the limited and SR5. The limited with the different transfer case will have a shorter rear shaft.

And yes without a transfer case the 2wd trucks are going to be much longer.

Toms has a terrific page that pretty much spells out how to measure for a custom shaft.
