Drivetrain breathers

I just picked up a 2010 TE last week to replace my 2004 SR5 4WD and am very impressed with it so far (6 days and 300 miles later).

I was crawling around under the TE this weekend and noticed the same issue with the rear diff breather that the 4th gen had and ordered the parts to do the mod.

I also found two small hoses that ran along the top of the transmission to a clamp just in front of the firewall above the bell housing, so it looks like the transmission and transfer case have elevated vents.

There was a third hose running to the same clamp, but I could not trace it back to source. I felt around the front diff and could not feel any vent fitting. Can anyone confirm that the front diff has an elevated vent? If it is not vented, does anyone know what this third tube vents?

On the vent tubes, I could see that one was for the xfer case and one for the xmission, but I am not sure what the third was for. I am assuming that it was for the front diff, but could not trace it back.

Anybody have access to TIS or manuals to see if the front diff is vented and where to?

if the xfer case and xmission have extended breathers and the rear isnt extended then i'm gonna have to go with front diff. i dont think theres really anything else to have breathers extended up front...

i'd like to grab a 2010 TE 4runner FSM and a Haynes manual as well as soon as they are available.

hopefully someone will chime in whose crawled under the 5th gen more than we have...

I picked up the parts for the rear diff mod this evening and had the parts guy pull up the front diff exploded diagram. There is a right angle vent threaded just to the passenger side of where the main housing halves bolt together. The vent terminates in a tubing barb which I assume accounts for the third vent referred to in the top post of this thread. I will try to trace for sure this weekend.

There is a front diff breather. Confirmed via TIS. I don't know where it routes in the chassis, though. It only showed the portion that attached to the diff.

Quentin, thanks that confirms what I saw at my dealer. I'll try to trace it this weekend, if I have the time before leaving town Sunday for a week.

with all the wires and hosing running under this beast, why the heck arent they covered up? any vandal could cut any number of them and then next thing you know youre on the 6 o clock news.
