Drivetrain Q: What if the inner boots are just gone?

After looking at someone else's photos last week of the inner boots, I started to worry that I didn't remember mine being so visible.

Cranked the wheel and looked in. I am missing inner boots on both left and right front CVs.

Should I just get new CVs and get them installed, or could these ones be "rebooted". What urgency is there to getting this repaired? What impact does this have on the car?

That's not good. Depending on how long they've been that way, you could MAYBE just reboot/grease them. But seeing as you're in PA and probably have snow/salt/etc on the roads, I wouldn't recommend that. As far as urgency: It depends on where you drive and the road conditions, but I would say fix it as soon as you can.

I generally don't drive far, less than a mile to class and then home, grocery store. When you say "depends on.... road conditions", is that in reference to whether or not to replace? Or is because it will impact the safety of the car....

Have you ran these on the taco? They seem like a waste of money to me. The outer joint is the one that fails more often and they leave that OEM.
yes
the whole crew is.....
even guyz locked in the front
i dont give rats ass about the boots
never had a problem 94k on a 3+" lift on the taco and no boot mod and they were just about worn though....
if i can get 80k out of a cv im good to go
id like to know that when i got to put the pedal down in4 low that i am not going to snap the napa shaft in half......
for the $150 an axle im all about it.....id say the extra $100 is well spent
also are the Napa brand "chinese knock off" or actually decent.

me i wouldn't run them
but then again i like to go off road in remote places....
cvj or toyo is the only way id go

Extra 100? The ones I'm thinking of are like 560 a pair...

cvjaxles.com
they just went up in core charges
for our gen its part # 9808 @ $99 per axle
and $85 core charge
plus shipping

a year ago it was like $75 per axle and $50 core
but they had trouble getting people to send back the og toyo axles

definitely gonna do these next time I blow a CV. :thumb3:

ETA Brutalguyracing I was thinking of these http://lotusdevelopmentllc.mybigcom...omoly-axles-96-02-4runner-and-95-5-04-tacoma/ which they just released for the 4th gens

my thinking is put in cardones (as recommended by a lot of the other posts on here) right now as I'm not able to spend much time overlanding anyways. Check out the toyota shafts to see if they're still in good enough shape to just reboot. if so, reboot and have for when I can go overlanding as a spare. Or if I'm in the mood, swap them back in and keep the others as spare.

That's a good idea. Except I would probably go with the new ones, so you don't have to pay the core charge (which you won't be getting back if you keep the yota ones). I know at O'Reilly the new ones were only $10 more, each, and the core on the cardones were like $15 or $20 each. YMMV.

I just did this. Just put the new ones in, and I have Toyota's CV reboot kits to fix up the old OEM ones for when I get the time for some real wheelin'.

I did order new Cardones. No core charge, no returning old parts. Just plain and simple american manufactored brand new CVs.
